I really got an education this Fashion week thanks to some very creative exhibitors our Fashions Finest shows. I love fashion which reflects upon social issues and blurs the traditional boundaries between fashion and art. This year I had so many lessons to learn as I sat attentively pen, paper and camera ready.

Business and Ingenuity Lessons

Their legs must have been aching but the effect was sensational. Bow tie and apparel boys Velsvoir certainly pulled new tricks out of the bag when they decided to exhibit their collection upright. And, what a joy this was to be greeted with this sight when arriving a little late for their evening exhibit. Expecting to find empty chairs and hear respective reports of a 'great catwalk, ' I was happy to walk into this statuesque display of their work in a relaxed and informal setting topped off by relentless chunky beats provided by DiASCO and a musical pa by up and coming performance artist, Smith.

I had to hand it to these guys for combining fashion exhibition, music and business ethos. Afterwards, having had the pleasure of meeting parents of the velsior boys I heard that business was expanding well in Dubai and a new female range called S*uce had launched successfully. Two very proud parents I'm sure.

History Lessons

The theme running though both collections by Sydney-Davies and Ocansey Bianchi was war and combat. Sydney's collection took me on a journey of destruction and devastation post war to the rebirth of life and regeneration. These pictures below depicting a picture of survival after bombing and destruction.

Ocansey, still fighting war battles in her 'Immortal combat' collection with her clever use of combat styling, military blazers and bare midriff nineties- esq styling.

Lessons in Art, Structure and Expression

New comers Charlene Edwards and K McBETH pushed traditional boundaries of sculpture and shape in their Avant guard, futuristic collections. K.McBETH In particular for putting the puffer sleeve on the style barometer in her clever mix of futuristic and leather lux. Two names definitely worth keeping an eye on.

The most memorable lesson for me, however came from Scotland's very own Brain Chan. Taking out an art attack on fashion with his fusion of art medias and even the odd rubber glove thrown in good measure, he successfully achieved in bringing art to life.

And then to hear that this talented fine art, paint and print trained artist had no formal training in fashion. I had to avert my ears as this man is fashions future itself. Already gaining rave press reviews and accolades, Brian is a man we need be watching this year. Thanks to his work, there are no boundaries between the catwalk and the art room anymore. And to quote his words "Art is a life style, we live it, so let's wear it." Indeed, lets!
