The trend for wearing the most extravagant, ornate sunglasses is a favourite amongst celebrities and designers alike, and with plenty of new styles to choose from this season, there is no better time for you to get your specs on.
Fashion designers have gone gaga for large, framed glasses this spring/summer. Look to the catwalks of Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Miu Miu and Versace who all featured very large styles in their shows, accompanied by gold accessories and bold make up. Whether they be luxurious gold with expensive jewels, as seen at D&G or classically black rimmed at Versace, sunglasses are the perfect face framers and can immediately make any outfit look great.
But which shapes do you go for? Considering these glasses will cover quite a lot of your eyes and eyebrow area, make sure you don’t overdo this look. If you have an oval face, aviator sunglasses will look fantastic while if you have more of a rounded face, try something with more shape, like cats eye glasses to balance out your features. (Look to Audrey Hepburn for more a retro look.) For square faces, glasses with a large round lens are a good option and for heart shapes, a pair of wide rimmed Ray Bans will work a treat.
When it comes to matching these styles to your everyday outfit, you can make these eccentric accessories work in your favour. If you’re wearing something quite smart or an all black look, then try a bit of colour with either red or gold rims to lift your look. If heading out for a concert, a spot of lunch or even just a walk in the park, then just go for it and try whatever style you’re feeling, regardless of whether you think you look like Willy Wonka or not. Celebrities too love showing off their large specs whenever they can. Rita Ora, Lady Gaga and Rihanna are regularly spotted wearing a decadent pair of oversized sunglasses while Gigi Hadid and younger sister Bella are often snapped leaving fashion shows hidden behind a large pair of embellished specs.
This trend is not for the faint hearted, but when these glasses look this amazing it’s definitely worth a try. Take a look below at some of the best styles we’ve seen, on and off the catwalk.
