New York Fashion Week has begun!

Soon to be followed by London starting on the 17th September, and then off to Milan and finally the super chic Paris. With dozens of designers showing off their latest collections everyday, with numerous after parties and pop up shops selling their wares, New York is the perfect starting point for the Spring/Summer 2016 collections, with the likes of Michael Kors, Diane von Furstenberg, Alexander Wang, Ralph Lauren and Marc Jacobs set to show in the next week. Super brand Givenchy is also set to show their spring collection next week, instead of at their usual Paris Fashion Week slot. Very exciting!

Kicking things off yesterday, Lubov Azria presented hers latest show for BCBG to much critical acclaim. With an emphasis on festival wear, patchwork Navajo quilting and plenty of clashing prints, this was a cool, yet understated collection with strong links to Americana. And it seems the famous Coachella festival in Palm Springs, California was a key starting point for inspiration. “Every season, we pick a destination, but this time, it’s Southern California, Los Angeles—we’re staying right here!” Azria, explained to British Vogue.

Clothes were loose with a sporty vibe, with plenty of layering and experimenting with different lengths. Long maxi dresses were tie-dyed while some were in block colours, Aztec print shirts tucked into shorts were effortlessly chic and the beautiful pastel coloured ponchos were cultural but stylish at the same time.

The patchwork bucket hats were the big talking point. Perhaps inspired by Pharrell Williams’ famous Vivienne Westwood hat, these were reminiscent of the kind you owned when you were a little girl. Cute and preppy but practical to keep those Californian rays out of your eyes.

While models stalked down the catwalk with minimal, sun kissed makeup and beach ready Los Angeles curls, there was a real sense of summer beginning all over again. The stripy trousers which sat snugly on the waist looked comfy and easy while the side satchel bags were perfect for transporting all your essentials down to the beach on a hot summers day. There was some knitwear thrown into the collection, with a couple of striped jumpers but overall this was a show which celebrated a perfect American summer.
