After Dior's tropical offering of luxe fashion for their cruise 2015 collection last week, Karl Lagerfeld went one better.
This is Chanel, so a single catwalk in a posh Parisian townhouse would never do, according to Lagerfeld who set his Chanel Resort 2015 collection on a deserted island in the breathtakingly beautiful Dubai. As the fashion press sailed across the sea on small, Arabian boats, they were treated to a sumptuous display of high fashion, done the Chanel way.
The main motif of the show was East meets West. The luxury fashions of the Western world collided with the sweeping romanticism of the Middle East, as models sported luxurious creations with exotic twists and surprises. As always, there was a lot of tweed (a national emblem and homage to Gabrielle Chanel herself) this time updated with pretty pastel colours and shorter, cropped jackets. Tight leggings were worn under knee length skirts, looking very chic, while loose silhouettes flattered the models' bodies as yards of soft chiffon floated across the catwalk. This looser, more simple style of dress really worked for Chanel, as it moved us on from the tight, cinched waists we saw in their last couture collection, which was stunning but a little unpractical!
As for the dresses...they were another story! Paisley and floral prints were intertwined beautifully on skirts and maxi dresses, adorned with silver embellishment and careful tailoring. Throughout the collection, Lagerfeld focused on a very opulent colour palette, with gold, brown and silver taking centre stage on everything from jackets to shoes. One of the most desirable dresses, had to be the a-line maxi Joan Smalls wore for her final look. It could be dressed up elegantly for evening or equally dressed down for a days shopping in Bond Street. Perfection.
Hair and make up was also taken into careful consideration by Chanel's make up team. Hair was big and billowing, contained by delicate silver headbands encrusted with half crescent moons or dripping in the iconic Chanel pearls. Eyes were smoky and hot with layers of black eye-shadow and eyeliner applied to each and every model who also wore lush, baby pink lipstick adding to the sensuality of the collection.
This Chanel Resort collection was most defiantly a feast for the ever vigilant fashion eyes, with even Lagerfeld stating, 'With the highest building, I thought there was a reason to show the highest fashion!' Well, what were we to expect? This is Chanel!
