There was a difference to the autumn/winter 2014 catwalk collections this year.
Designers broke away from the serious stereotype fashion shows usually embody, adopting a more fun approach with silly references and amusing icons. The rules for winter? Let loose and have some fashion fun!
Karl Lagerfeld's Chanel show was one of the clear highlights of Paris Fashion Week. With Rihanna and Keira Knightley sitting front row, models paraded through a supermarket stocked solely with Chanel goods, pushing shopping trolleys and browsing various products. If this isn't cool, accessible fashion, I don't know what is! Lagerfeld has brought trainers into the high fashion mix as well as tracksuits and big, bold colours. This outlandish sense of fun was also seen at Diane Von Furstenberg in New York and Sophia Webster in London, where funky heels ruled supreme.
As Jeremy Scott revealed his first collection for Moschino in Milan, his witty collection split fashion critics who didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Using the famous McDonalds logo and Spongebob Squarepants as inspiration, Scott played around with colours and popular culture to create an extremely cool collection, with a feel good factor all around. Dsquared2, Preen and Comme des Garçons were other noticeable shows with an amusing twist. Kate and Laura Mulleavy at Rodarte even used Star Wars prints on t-shirts and dresses as did Preen at London Fashion Week, with a certain cinematic feel.
However it was accessory designer brands, Kate Spade and Anya Hindmarch who really captured the new found fun in fashion. Hindmarch presented us with a fall collection packed full of great bags with Daz, Kellogs and Ariel logos taking prime position on everything from clutches to handbags. Kate Spade New York also went all out for witty pop art with their designs, giving the usually scrutinizing fashion press something to smile about.
It's clear that this winter we are all meant to have a bit of fun with our clothes. Mix things up and don't be afraid to make a statement, as seen at Moschino. Either way, you have Karl Lagerfeld's sacred blessing!
