November is upon us, which means winter has officially got underway.

With the weather turning colder and the nights drawing in, now is the time to start the usually tedious hunt for a perfect winter coat. Luckily for you, we've compiled some of the best styles out there and the top stores to get your search underway.

As seen at Chloe, Isabel Marant and Donna Karan, the masculine oversized coat is a key silhouette for winter. Large, boxy shoulders and long tailored shapes are perfect for nailing this trend, with high street retailers River Island and Cos selling some of the best. If you're tall and slender, this style of coat is absolutely made for you, with longer shapes giving you added elegance and class.

If you've been anywhere near a fashion magazine (or any womenswear store for that matter) you'd have noticed that camel, tan and black are the essential autumnal colours that will see you safely through the next couple of months in style. It's true that camel is a difficult colour to wear and usually suits women with darker hair shades and complexions, yet there are so many different shades on the high street you're bound to find a colour that suits you. Joseph do an amazing wool-cashmere mix coat in beige which looks incredibly stylish as well as practically warm, whereas Miss Selfridge have some great wool coats with detachable fur stoles around the colour – adding a touch of glamour to any outfit.

For the fall 2014/15 shows, Christopher Bailey at Burberry sent out amazing patchwork, burgundy capes personalised with the wearer's initials. This oversized cape trend has been completely reinvented by the high street with Marks and Spencer's, Accessorise and New Look donning some of the best examples. Whether it be a snugly, blanket cape (as seen at H&M) or a minimalist style poncho; capes are big news for fashion this winter and look great dressed down with a pair of jeans or glammed up with heels. What's more, there is no age limit when wearing a cape as the shape is completely transformed to flatter your figure as soon as you throw it on. Easy and simple!

Finally, as was to be expected, fur coats have made a sophisticated come back following their popularity last winter. Faux or real? It's your choice, but take a look in Next and Zara for some of the most fashionable examples and colour varieties. Even though coat shopping can sometimes be an exasperating and fussy task, there is a coat out there to suit everyone. It's a little like house hunting - you'll know when you've found 'the one!'
