Yet suede is making a huge comeback this year thanks to the likes of Gucci, Tommy Hilfiger, Derek Lam and Chloe on the spring ready-to-wear 2015 catwalks.
Usually associated with the 1970’s and all things hippy chick, suede is one of those perfect but problematic fabrics which can be dressed up or dressed down depending on the occasion. It’s ideal not to wear it in the rain (as it damages easily) or in the scorching heat as the heaviness of the material will only make you feel more warm, but otherwise a suede skirt or tanned tassel top are perfectly on trend this year.
At Milan Fashion Week, Gucci showed off brown suede shirt dresses as well as knee high boots in an array of colours while in New York Fashion Week, Derek Lam went for suburban chic with matching skirts and dresses in specially dyed suede in purple and chocolate brown tones. Celebrities are also loving the trend. Alexa Chung has worn her Marks and Spencer suede skirt numerous times while out and about, pairing it with either a simple t-shirt or dressier silk shirt and heels. Olivia Palermo and Kate Hudson are also all for the suede trend, donning various pieces during the international fashion weeks while Kylie Jenner’s faithful suede jacket is a firm favourite.
And now the high street has embraced suede too. Asos have a number of great tan suede skirts, starting at only £20 for a swinging 60’s mini. Opt for a buttoned number to add a military edge to your look or something with more tassels and pattern for a touch of Americana. All Saints Western Shirt £198, is one of the most popular styles on their website as are their elegant suede boots either with a Cuban heel or a more flat style. Spanish brands Mango and Zara have some of the most exquisite suede bags on offer. Mango’s fringed suede bag or their equally fabulous buckle bag in beautiful tan is definitely a true investment piece that will see you through all seasons.
When it comes to suede boots, go for a summery style and nothing too over the top. Warehouse, House of Fraser and Stuart Weitzman have some of the best examples, depending if you want over the knee, ankle or cowboy boots. You could even try something with a pattern too.
Either way, suede is your friend this summer. So take your pick of the high street and rock this fun trend to your hearts content.
