Cut From a Different Cloth

Wednesday, 23 February 2011 Sherry Tagoe
It's not often that one can have an informal chat with a designer without the presence of an entourage and a PR team surrounding them. It's not often one meets someone like Yanto.

Yanto describes his background as non fashion and was more reflective of a normal 9 to 5 career. Yanto seems to be a different kind of designer. Refreshing, new, and unorthodox are just three of the words that come to mind during what must have been an hour long chat with him at Layers on Conduit Street.

Yanto explained that his "organic creations" at Layers were compromised of four different types of elastics. He feels that not only is the material very forgiving but it also provides texture. His collection includes a range of leggings, dresses, and jackets.

Yanto: A Snapshot

Background

Yanto is not a designer that has had a passion for the craft from a young age. He completed a short course at the London College of Fashion which brought him to pursue his label. Yanto does not sketch or draw. He creates his designs with imagination and trial and error.

Work ethic

Yanto preaches that he runs his business with integrity. He says that he doesn't focus on the celebrity vote, or wondering if his designs will be on the next Beyonce or Lady Gaga. Yanto made it clear that he doesn't have interns. He doesn't believe in people working for him and not getting paid. He says he tried it once however it was a short lived experience. Yanto keeps his business close to home and while conducting business in a busy city he resides in Leicestershire. His wife handles his PR .Yanto says family is a priority and this week he is balancing LFW around his three children's half term from school.

What is next for the collection

Yanto expressed that he wants to do something different with his skills in fashion. He wants to always stand alone as a designer and wants to be remembered for something outside the norm. He says his designs are for everyone and he does not create with a specific customer in mind.

Yanto is definitely a designer to watch and in comparison to some household names he appears to be truly cut from a different cloth.

Yanto is currently stocked at Harrods.
