Chika Couture is a new UK based African inspired fashion label. The designer, Chika Iwenofu, 18, is of African origin and her use of bold prints and daring cuts show the clear influence the continent has on her designs. The label was founded by Chika in 2009 at the age of 15, and was created to inspire young individuals to embrace culture and diversity through fashion, in such a multicultural society. The young designer has always loved being involved in creative projects and was selected to represent London as a BBC Blast Youth Panel Ambassador in 2009, an initiative aimed at inspiring and helping young people all over the country to discover creative industries and new talents.
The Chika Couture debut Autumn/Winter' 11 collection was showcased during London Fashion Week at the Fashions Finest Renaissance shows in February and attracted the attention of many people, being featured in various publications including the Guardian Newspaper and Niji Magazine.
Nominated for the 'Fashions Finest Graduate Designer of the Year' Award earlier this year, Chika Couture has grown from strength to strength and the latest Spring/Summer' 12 Collection was showcased at The Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank in September as part of the African Music Festival receiving fantastic reviews and inspiring Chika to continue the pursuit of her career within the fashion industry.
Chika, still in her final year of college, takes pride in her Nigerian heritage and the exclusive Online Collection features affordable statement pieces which effortlessly juxtapose the bold and graphic West African Ankara prints with soft delicate chiffons and glistening gem stones.
