The awaited Chika Couture Spring/Summer'14 collection 'PunkAfrique' will be showcased during Fashions Finest London Fashion Week show this September at a top London location in Covent Garden. The show marks the start of the young designer's pursuit to support and inspire other young people who wish to have a career in the Fashion industry. The collection features collaboration with the designer and a group of young people who have struggled finding employment in London. The project aims to address the issue of youth unemployment, equipping young people with the key skills and experience needed to become self-employed or work successfully in fashion companies.
Chika Couture is an emerging UK based Afrocentric fashion label. The designer, Chika Iwenofu, currently a BA Textiles student at Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design, is of African origin and her use of bold, colourful prints show the clear influence the continent has on her designs. The label was founded by Chika in 2009 at the tender age of 15, and was created to inspire young individuals to embrace culture and diversity through fashion, in such a multicultural society. The young designer has always loved being involved in creative projects and was selected to represent London as a BBC Blast Youth Panel Ambassador in 2009, an initiative aimed at inspiring and helping young people all over the UK to discover creative industries and new talents.
The Chika Couture debut Autumn/Winter collection was showcased during London Fashion Week at the Fashions Finest Renaissance shows in February 2011 and attracted the attention of the media, being featured in various publications including the Guardian Newspaper, Limelight Magazine and Niji Magazine.
Nominated for The Guardian's 'Croydon Champions Awards' in 2012 and 'Fashions Finest Graduate Designer of the Year' Award in 2011, Chika Couture has grown from strength to strength and the latest Spring/Summer'13 Collection was showcased at The Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank last September as part of the African Music Festival receiving fantastic reviews and inspiring Chika to continue the pursuit of her career within the fashion industry.
Chika, in her first year of university, takes pride in her Nigerian heritage and her newly launched online retail site www.chikacouture.com, features affordable statement pieces which effortlessly juxtapose the bold and graphic West African Ankara prints with on trend contemporary looks. Chika Couture pushes the boundaries of conventional fashion, providing outfits guaranteed to steal the show whatever the occasion.
