Walk on the wild western side

As fashion continues to take many an interesting turn this year, one trend which continues to excite me is fashions trip down 1970s memory lane. Despite being faced off by all manner of prints, monochromes and bold block colours, there are some designers that just keep pulling those seventies classics out and then others who dare to take an even braver walk on the wild western side.

Seventies styles such as tie blouses and flared trouser suits have featured on Valentin Yudaskins catwalk in Paris Fashion week. We also have Mui Mui to thank for their bold seventies print suit and cigarette pants last year. But to me the most prominent designer taking us on a retrospective walk at Paris fashion week was Hedi Slimone.

Casting his debut eye back to the seventies, heading reformed label Saint Laurent, Slimone, certainly added his drama to our growing love for the cowboy boot, leather and all things western in his SS2013 Paris fashion week catwalk.

Poo-poed by sceptics as too 'costumed', bland, 'old- boho', and too Stevie nicks! - (and this was apparently a bad thing!?), his collection was far boring or parody my eyes. Adding cowboy touches to slimming/ elongating block silhouettes of dark cigarette pants and gorgeous tie blouses it struck me as the best way too to wear this bold trend we are already fascinated with... Progression really, with the addition of lots of interesting twists and turns!

Take the cowboy hat For instance, upon close inspection, we see that it has travelled to the eighties and gained a floppy brim, making that baseline silhouette appear a little 1980s at first glance although some would say the trousers, blouse, additional fur and biker jackets in Slimones collections nod to an era of seventies glam rock. All this nostalgia and styling then finished off by that cowboy jacket and sheriff blouse dressed up in elegant T bar shoes!

And with the rest of his collection featuring long billowy boho- come festi-chic dresses, leather cowgirl skirts, sequinned touches and beautifully constructed cropped military jackets, this man has given us so much to work with and so much more to one outfit! Time travel back and forth to the seventies and Wild West without the aid of a DeLorean!

So naturally out came last year's biker jacket and cigarette trousers, my charity shop bought tie blouses, the laptop and inspiration to help you put together the key pieces I feature below.

Essential pieces to dress this look...

• Tie blouse- definitely hunt some out at your local charity shop.
• Black cigarette pants and suit jacket or any suit you bought last summer/autumn. I did tell you they were going to be big and if you listened, feel very smug now!
• Black floppy hat.
• Last year's biker jacket, sequinned top, your winter furs.
• To avoid the "all hat and no cattle" OTT cowboy look, accessorise your dressing with a maximum of two western touches and keep the rest smart and sleek. Less is definitely more!
