The Science Behind Stretch Marks

Between 50 and 90 percent of women who are pregnant experience stretch marks during pregnancy or after giving birth.

Stretch marks form in the dermis, or middle layer of the skin, when the connective tissue is stretched beyond the limits of its elasticity.

Under normal circumstances the connecting fibres in the dermis can slowly stretch to accommodate growth, however, rapid growth such as through pregnancy, can cause the dermis to tear, allowing deeper layers of skin to show through.
