Scrolling through Instagram can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, we see dazzling images which interest, inspire, and intrigue us. On the other, we can quickly become disheartened by the seemingly perfect images of our friends, family, and colleagues, not to mention the images from celebrities which we pour over.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to separate the impromptu, natural photographs from the altered images created using photoshop apps like Facetune.

This can have a devastating impact on our self-esteem and perception of reality, as we become gradually invested in allusions of perfection. With social media platforms like Instagram becoming increasingly under fire for their duties of care and codes of practice, we investigate how to get that Instagram ‘look’ without promoting unachievable standards of beauty and doctoring our posts.

 Healthy Lifestyle

Beauty comes from within. If you want the healthy, youthful, and radiant glow of an Instagram influencer, you need to be thinking about how your health and wellbeing makes this possible. The NHS publish guidelines on how to eat well, maintain a healthy weight and BMI, exercise regularly, reduce alcohol consumption, and quit smoking. They also emphasise the importance of mental wellbeing, with practical advice and tools to help you maintain good mental and emotional health.

 Skincare

Photoshop apps for Instagram are predominantly used to alter the appearance of a person’s skin. We very rarely see images, particularly from celebrities and influencers, which show blemishes, blackheads, spots, or general imperfections. One of the keys to unlocking the Instagram ‘look’ without altering photos is to maintain a good skincare routine. This doesn’t have to come at a hefty expense. Cleansers like micellar water are inexpensive and will rid your skin of dirt and impurities. Toning your skin helps to remove excess oils and dead skin cells. Moisturising regularly will keep your skin feeling supple and plump. These simple steps help you to look your best at all times. And, of course, drink plenty of water!

 Sleep

A good night’s sleep, between 7 and 9 hours, is vital to our physical health and mental wellbeing. The benefits of sleep cannot be overstressed. They include the reduction of stress, the improvement of memory, lower blood pressure, an increased immune system, weight management, improved mood, healthier heart, and a higher pain threshold. All of these health benefits are reflected in our physical appearance. Kickstart that fresh and healthy Instagram glow by getting a good night’s sleep regularly.

 Facial Aesthetics

Sometimes we are insecure about elements of our physical appearance, and no amount of healthy living can make us feel better about ourselves. If you’re struggling with your self-confidence due to minor facial imperfections, facial aesthetics treatments may be an option for you. Minor procedures like anti-wrinkle treatment, dermal fillers, and lip fillers are not very intrusive, can be non-surgical, and will give your Instagram ‘look’ that extra boost – if you feel like it.
