5 Common Mistakes When it Comes to Fashion

1. Avoiding Wearing More Than One Bold Colour

It is a common misconception that you can only wear one bold colour at a time at the risk of visual offence. However, a phenomenon has hit the 2018 runways known as colour blocking, a technique that allows you to go daring with your bold colours and yes, wear them at the same time. Colour blocking is when a garment or outfit is composed of finite blocks of colour. Leading designers have revisited this trend which was hugely popular in the 1960’s and 80’s by adding a modern twist to create unique and exciting styles that have been adopted by high-street retail. It may seem as though it is not the easiest trend to pull off however with a little guidance, you can ditch the old habits of wearing one colour at a time and start colour-blocking.

A top tip when it comes to colour blocking is to wear a belt. The general rule for ladies designer belts this season is the bigger the better. This is perfect when it comes to colour blocking as a thick black or brown belt will neutralise and break up the bold colours, as well as accentuate the waistline.

2. Same Sizing It for Everything

Sizing can vary dramatically according to the store, brand and item of clothing so it is important that you don’t always go for a set size as this can lead to ill-fitting clothes which is a definite fashion mistake. Cheaper clothing typically fits way bigger so instead of worrying about numbers, it is better to pay attention to how things look on your body. Purchasing clothes that fit a desired weight is also a big mistake when it comes to fashion as aspirational shopping is not only a waste of money, but a waste of space in the wardrobe as the clothes you buy sit unused until you reach your fitness goals. It is much smarter to invest in your new wardrobe once you have reached your fitness goals.

In order to choose the right size, it is always best to try the clothes on when you are in the shop to avoid disappointment when you get home and another trip to return the ill fitted items. Make use of the sizing charts and ignore the tags as this will give you a more accurate size guiding designed to be more personalized to your body shape and size.

3. Believing that Menswear Should be Worn by Just Men

A trend that has dominated the winter fashion season is the oversized look, whether this be sweatshirts, t-shirts or coats. When looking for oversized items, it is always a good idea to have a look in the mens section as this can often give you the perfect oversized fit that you are looking for.
A classic way to transform menswear into womenswear is by ditching the dress and wearing a men’s shirt as an alternative. This looks super cute with bare legs and some heels to add some femininity to the shirt, whilst still innkeeping with the shirts formal masculinity. Shapeless blazers with large shoulder pads can also very easily transform a boring outfit into something cute and chic perfect for a smart-casual vibe.

4. Low Waist Jeans with Crop Top

A trend from the 90s and 2000s that should most certainly be left there. Crop tops can still be part of the necessity section in the wardrobe, along with low rise jeans however the two should no-longer be paired no matter how much you like your stomach. Pair your crop-top with a high-waisted pair of jeans as this is super flattering for the figure and accentuates your waistline. High-waisted trousers also give the illusion of an elongated lower body tricking the eye into thinking you are taller and slimmer.

5. Different Belt and Shoe Colour

This rule should be taken loosely as it doesn’t always apply. If your belt is neutral coloured such as black or brown, then wear whatever coloured shoe you wish. A black belt with some leopard print boots would work really well together as long as the rest of the outfit remains neutral and black. A bold belt and bold coloured shoes should be avoided as these will clash. When it comes to bold prints it is best to have one piece that is centre of attention, instead of two pieces fighting for attention.

The harshness of the cold weather can cause many adverse implications for our skin such as dehydration, breakouts and redness. It is important to consider that no skin is the same so treating it accordingly is key.

Although it is a common conception that oiliness only occurs in the hot summer months, this is not true. Oiliness can actually occur more during the colder months due to the body producing excessive oils to keep the skin hydrated naturally. This means that investing in a good oil balancing cleanser is essential in order to reduce shine and ensure that your makeup stays on all day.

Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser is perfect for those with Oily skin during the winter months, but also great for those who are spot-prone. Use this cleanser at night for best results as it removes excess oil, dirt and makeup leaving your skin feeling squeaky clean!

Alternatively, if you are someone that suffers from dryness as a result of the cold temperatures, then the Clinque Moisture Surge would be the perfect investment for you. This moisturiser works non-stop for 72 hours for immediate and long-term hydration.

What is great about this moisturiser is that it is a light, gel-cream that is quickly absorbed meaning it doesn’t make your makeup slide like most heavy moisturisers do.

Your makeup is just as important as your outfit, particularly during the Christmas season. Christmas really wouldn’t be Christmas without some face glitter to create the ultimate festive eye. Whether you are going on a Christmas night out with work or for festive drinks with friends, or on a works Christmas night out, there is no need to hold back on the sparkle.

If you want a more subtle glitter makeup look, why not try a dramatic smokey eye using a blend of black and brown shadows, then apply a touch of glitter to the inner corner to add a pop of sparkle as well as elongating the eye shape.

Or if you want to go all out, create a cut crease using a thick concealer and then generously pat glitter onto the eyelid using a flat brush. Make sure you apply glitter glue prior to glitter application for a long-lasting sparkle.

If you are feeling extra daring this year, be sure to try a sprinkle of green or red glitter for even more of a festive look.

We all know the feeling of chapped and cracked lips that come during the colder months where it feels like nothing will make them feel moist again. It is so important to invest in a balm that will actually work.

Tip: Although Vaseline is used worldwide, it is actually just like applying a thick layer of oil on top of the lip which your pores are unable to absorb. So, while it may feel moisturising, it is in fact, doing absolutely nothing apart from clogging the pores which, if used on the skin, can cause spots. It is also extremely greasy and if worn in the sun will fry your lips like oil in a chip pan.

Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip Balm contains honey and other quality oils that that protect your lips as well as repair damage. For intense action, you can use as a lip mask by applying a thick layer to the lips before bed which will repair the lips during the night then top up in the morning to hydrate for the day.

A dark lip is the perfect way to make a seasonal statement. No Christmas makeup look would be complete without a deep red lip. If you don’t fancy doing a dramatic eye, then a dark lip is the perfect alternative. Although red is the most popular, why not try a deep plum for a super beautiful autumnal look.

MAC have a huge variety of lipsticks ranging from nudes to daring darks. They also come in three different formulas (matte, satin and creamy) to suit your style and preference. This is also great if you have dry lips, as the creamy lipstick will not dry them out further.

Hair

We can often forget about the importance of the health of our hair focusing on just our skin. With the essential expenses of Christmas presents and good skin care, the though of spending more money on hair care is understandably off-putting. No need to worry, you can make a DIY hair treatment that will work just as well.

Try a mixture of avocado and coconut oil for silky smooth hair and extra shine. The avocado contains oils and proteins that will smooth the hair and create shine, and the coconut oil is great for penetrating deep into the hair shaft for intense moisturization.

Heat the coconut oil in the microwave untill it melts into a pouring liquid. Stir in crushed avocado to create a paste and then work into the roots, through to the ends. Leave in for a few hours or overnight for extra intensity.

This treatment is sure to protect your hair from the dry winter winds.

Summer is quickly becoming a distant memory, and the weather is reminding us daily that it is time to ditch the summer wardrobe and say hello to a new season of fashion, cosy nights in and an abundance of chocolate.

Although it can often be difficult getting into the swing of things after a seemingly endless summer, particularly when it comes to transforming your wardrobe from bikinis to jumpers. No need to stress, you’re top 2018 Winter trends are coming your way making your Christmas that little bit easier!

We all know Winter wouldn’t be Winter without a great pair of boots (or three) and it’s no secret that Alexander McQueen’s Winter boot collection is breath-taking. The collection hosts an array of gorgeous styles ranging from chunky ankle boots to sexy leather thigh-highs. Or nod to the 60's with the beautifully elegant leather mid-calf length boots with a round toe and block heel.

Luckily, such pieces haven’t gone a miss, and high-street retail has brought out their own interpretation of boots, saving you a whole load of money this Winter.

Pair your thigh-highs with an oversized knit for a cute yet effortless look which is often modelled by Ariana Grande. Or if the thought of bare legs is making your shiver, you can wear with jeans or tights. In the Style is a great place to look for affordable boots that are inspired by the catwalk.

Being cold is not an option this year, as an over-spill of coats from the runway take over the high street in an abundance of styles, you are sure to find one that suits you! A particularly popular trend this Winter is the shearling jacket that has originated from the Stone Age where sheepskin was used to protect and insulate. Almost 2.5 million years later, this historical classic has made it onto the 2018 runway, being interpreted by a range of designers in a host of different styles including; leather, denim, suede and bomber, all combined with essences of Shearling. A piece we cannot ignore is by Giorgio Armani which contained a mix of brown suede and leather giving the jacket texture and detail, costing a total of £2900.

If that’s too hard to swallow, the high-streets have brought out a range of heavy-duty faux shearling jackets that look good enough for the runway at totally affordable prices making it a worthwhile investment this Winter. This smart sophisticated jacket looks super cute worn causally with a pair of jeans, a t-shirt and some casual shoes, adding an essence of boldness and grunge to a ‘made no effort’ outfit.

Alternatively, a statement coat is a perfect way to effortlessly add a pop of colour and texture to a neutral or black outfit, making you look like you are fresh off the runway. Oversized bomber jackets are super on trend this season as well as faux fur and long trench coats. The options are endless, and each are a great way of making a statement as well as staying warm and comfortable this Winter.

This trend is a definite favourite as it offers comfort and warmth as well as a cute and effortless look that you can wear with anything. You can find these sweaters anywhere, from Primark to Urban Outfitters depending on your budget. A top trick is to look in the men’s section for that perfect oversized fit.
