Akong London

Super-luxe Jewellery Collection

As if my statement jewellery obsession needed any further encouragement, my magpie eye, drew me to Designer Nicole Akong from Akon London, while strolling around the LFW hub at Somerset House where I oohed and aah'd over the stunningly over-the-top statement jewellery collection she had on display at her stand which in my opinion can only be described as wearable art.

West-Indian born ex City-worker Nicole Akong started out developing jewellery in 2008 and Akon London, was only launched at the start of 2010, but has already gained a cult following, having already been featured within publications such as Grazia UK, The Sunday Times Style and Harper's Bazaar, in addition to several fashion blogs.
The Midas, couture influenced collection consists of hand made bejeweled necklaces and anklets made from a stunningly random combination of goose feathers, chunky chains, faceted stones and velvet ties that have a theatrical eclectic and exotic nature.

I don't think so!

Finding a stunning pair of shoes that fit comfortably and perfectly match your clothes, can be of the hardest things a woman has to regularly do, and in this day and age it's not unusual to for there to be over 20 pairs in a woman's wardrobes stacked in boxes or displayed on specially made shoe racks.

Elisha Francis Jewellery

Inspired by her 'love of all things beautiful'.

I discovered my love for jewellery as a child playing in my mother's jewellery box, a love which I still harbour many years later; and never feel completely dressed for a night on the town unless I am appropriately adorned.

Whether the pieces are cheap and cheerful or one of a kind, vintage trinkets; the correct jewellery has the ability to make the wearer feel sophisticated, glamorous and of course Fabulous.

South London based Jewellery designer Elisha Francis definitely understands this concept.
Elisha_francess_head_dressInspired by her "love of all things beautiful" Elisha Francis has created a handcrafted collection of exquisite and imaginative Necklaces, earrings, headdresses and bracelets using a impressive variety of semi precious stones, pearls and crystals, which have deservedly earned her an Award for Innovation in the Creative Sector from GLE One London in March 2010.
Crystal_fallDescribing her personal style as quirky, feminine with a touch of glamour Elisha identifies her favourite piece from her collections as being the Midnight Fall Necklace, which is a Black Agate Centrepiece, surrounded by an array of Swarovski Crystals and glass beads from the shimmering Waterfall collection and was inspired by the Dunns River Falls in Jamaica.

Elisha Francis Jewellery can be purchased from elishafrancis.com or a number of Stores around London.

Custom pieces for special occasions such as weddings can be commissioned upon request.

Why not try investing in some professional makeup brushes.

It's a little known fact that professional standard makeup brushes are a great way to get the most out of your cosmetics.

As the price of professional make up brush sets can cost up to £100 (and in some cases more) such a purchase may seem a tad extravagant, especially if you only wear make up once in a while.

However if you do apply makeup daily it is worth considering making the investment.

Not only do they make applying makeup an easier process, eliminating the risk of contamination from dirty fingers.

Many makeup pros swear that having a high-quality set of professional makeup brushes can help extend your cosmetics for up to two to three times their expected lifespan than the

cheaper Chemist variety and the applicators that come inside makeup packages as they simply don't have the design features that women need to achieve the best results, which can often lead wastage since more product has to be used to achieve the desired results and

8 Important brushes to start your collection are:
makeup brushPowder Brush: An oversized, fluffy brush that is used to dust on loose powder to set foundation, or to dust on bronzing powder. It can also be used it to brush off excess powder.

Blush Brush A smaller version of the Powder Brush that is used to apply blush, sheer powder or bronzing powder. This is one of the best makeup brushes you'll ever own!

Contour Brush: This brush has a rounded-angle shape, but it's essential for defining cheeks.

Lip Brush: should be small, narrow and flat. It should have straight end and fine bristles.

Foundation Brush: Used for applying and blending cream/liquid foundations. An advantage to using this brush is that it does not absorb foundation.

Eye shadow Brush: A fine brush used to sweep color all over the eyelid, accentuate the crease, or highlight the brow bone

Small Angle Eyeliner Brush: This makeup brush has firm bristles that are clipped at an angle. Use this brush to fill in sparse areas of the eyebrow, and trace an exact line along the lashes.

Fantail Brush: This brush can be used to create different effects on cheeks, eyes and other parts of the face.
While there are certainly additional professional makeup brushes that you can add to your collection going forward, the ones outlined above will give you a great start

Savvy consumers can try investing some of the smaller brush gift sets such as the:

Maceyebrushes Mac Eye Brush Gift Collection £39.50
dior Dior Backstage Make up brush kit
Bobby Brown Basic Brush Collection

These kits tend contain only the basic tools for everyday use such however you can purchase individual brushes as and when they are needed.

Once you do take the plunge and purchase your remember that good make up brushes when cared for properly can last up to five years. It's important to store them in a clean, dry, damage proof, and container and clean them regularly with an appropriate brush cleaner in order to maximize their effectiveness and avoid harboring lots of dirt and bacteria which can be transferred to your face every time you use them and cause break outs.

Dermalogica Bloggers Event

I have become a big fan of the Dermalogica products.

Since my previous blog Dermalogica Facial I have become a big fan of the Dermalogica products, and was obviously very happy to be invited to the Dermalogica Bloggers event at their show room in Kensington West London.

Upon arrival I was given a Goodie bag, introduced to the other bloggers then told to help myself to the selection of healthy goodies they had on offer.
2010-12-05_1533Much like the Dermalogica products and their packaging the showroom and the treatment rooms are white with minimal adornment or decoration giving it a clinical, no frills, no nonsense feel.
2010-12-05_15352010-12-05_1536After a quick snack and chat I was ushered to the facial bar where I had Face mapping analysis of my face completed by one of the technicians and a consultation about the products that I was currently using and how I could make them more effective for my skin problems.

I was currently using the Dermalogica Oily Skin Kit which consisted of the:
• Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser
• Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner
• Dermalogica Oil Control Lotion
• Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub
2010-12-05_1537The results of my Face mapping analysis said that my skin was Oily in some areas but at the same time dehydrated in others and prone to break outs.

It was recommended that I try using the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant every day to help shift some of the dead skin, this can be used by its self or mixed in with the Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser and the Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster to add extra hydration to my skin by either applying it directly to my face or mixing it with the Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner.

After the consultations were finished myself and the other bloggers were ushered in to the training room where we was introduced to the founder of Dermalogica Jane Wurwand; who explained to us how after moving to LA in the early 80's she noticed that there were no product lines available at that that embraced her belief of "Skin health as opposed to beauty," so she so set about developing her own products which were free of common irritants and ingredients that could cause breakouts such as lanolin, SD alcohol, mineral oil, artificial colors and fragrances. In 1986, Dermalogica was born.

With the belief "Truly understanding your skin is the first step towards a lifetime of skin health" Dermalogica products are only available to purchase from a Dermalogica professional skin therapist who will have to 1st will decode your skin – zone by zone – before advising the customer what products would best suite their needs insuring the best possible results.
2010-12-05_1537_001We were then treated to a tutorial session which gave us the opportunity to try out the recommended products on our selves with the Beauty technician making sure that we were applying the right amounts correctly maximizing the effectiveness of the products.
2010-12-05_1537_002Once the tutorial was over we were given the opportunity to talk to the Technicians questions about the products.

And as if an evening learning about great products that will ultimately improve the health of my skin wasn't enough my Goodie bag included the following products:

• Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant
• Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel
• Dermalogica Active Moist
• Dermalogica Booster Trio

This is great as I intended to purchase the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant and the Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster anyway.

Lace Fronts

By Lee-Anne Weise

Here to stay?

Until recently, the lace front wig was used in the film industry for movies, and was created to give actors a more natural appearance as they performed in roles.

However they have quickly grown in popularity since being seen on several well known celebrities such as Beyonce, Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks.
lacefront_tyra_twoThe lace base of the wig creates the illusion that the hair is growing out of the wearers head resulting in a nearly flawless hairline when applied correctly. Which is one of the reasons many celebrities have begun using the hairpiece for everyday use, it also helps protect their natural hair against harsh environments, and allows them to experiment with new looks.
lacefront_beyonce_oneLace front wigs are available in a various different colors, textures and styles to mimic natural hair. It is also commonly used by women with issues like alopecia, female pattern balding, and even hair loss due to chemotherapy allowing them maintain their appearance and self-esteem while hiding their hair issues.
lacefronts_twotonehair_threeAlthough exciting to use due to its versatility and natural look, it can be damaging to the natural hair if applied or removed incorrectly as the adhesives tape and hair glues that are commonly used to attach the lace front to the scalp, can damage the hairline and nape of the neck after continual use. The lace attachment can also become unattached and visible to the eye due to sweat or highly expressive facial movements as the glue can be stiff and does not always move with the skin on the forehead.
lacefront_beyoce_fiveApart from having to remove the wig to properly wash it the day to day upkeep is actually very low,
The day to day upkeep to maintain a lace front wig is similar to how you maintain your own hair; however the wig must be removed in order to be properly washed.

Supreme Quality hair Wigs have been known to cost up to $20,000 and a good custom made lace front in the US could set you back about £$2,000-$3,000; There are now many cheaper versions that are made from synthetic or human hair that can be purchased for as little as £30 (for the synthetic variety) however in my opinion the cheaper variety's do not mimic the hairline as well as the custom wigs.
lacefront_sixDespite it being highly recommended that wearers go to a trained hairdresser to have their wigs correctly fitted and removed there are many video tutorials on websites such as youtube Which feature tutorials women fitting their own lace fronts and the end results seem to be ok however I do personally know a woman who did not apply the glue properly and lost most of her hairline when she eventually tried to remove the wig.

Dermalogica facial

After much contemplation I finally parted with my hard earned pounds to get a Dermalogica facial at the Beauty Haven Spa in South London.

I had previously heard about how good Dermalogica products were for the skin however I also knew they were quite expensive I wanted to have the correct products recommended for my skin by a trained professional.

Upon my arrival for my appointment I was asked to fill out a questionnaire containing questions about my skin profile, lifestyle, allergies, existing skin care regimen and my Skin goal's.

Once I finished the questionnaire I went over my answers with the Beauty consultant then, she ushered me to the treatment room where I was asked to remove the clothing from the top part of my body and was provided with a towel and a shower cap.

Once I was comfortable on the table covered in fluffy towels a Beauty consultant completed a Face Mapping Skin Analysis of my face using the Dermalogica Face Map as a guide.
dermaFace mapping skin analysis procedure provides the skin care therapist with an objective view of the skin's condition as well as an indication of the issues that might be affecting it.

Face mapping skin analysis divides the face into 14 distinct zones, each with its own set of potential problems and unique needs. Using the zones and the Dermalogica Face Map as a guide, the therapist is able to conduct an inch-by-inch, methodical analysis of the facial landscape, guaranteeing that the subsequent professional treatment and home-care prescription will fully address each client's concerns.

Please not this procedure is only available from approved Following Face Mapping skin analysis.

A facial was tailored to my specific needs which included:
• Face Cleansing
• Steam
• Exfoliation
• Extractions
• Pressure Point Face Massage
• Arm Massage
• Hand massage
• Foot massage
• Facial Mask

The whole experience took just over an hour 15 min and I found the experience to be really relaxing and at some point I'm sure I fell asleep.

I immediately noticed a diffrence in my skin after the facial; my skin had a really fresh feeling and was a lot smoother to the touch.

Once I was dressed Beauty consultant told me that my skin was generally in good condition but i had an oily T-zone area with a lot of dead skin around my cheeks which is stopping my skin from absorbing moisture and giving the illusion that my skin is dryer than it is.

I was then advised that I needed to drink more water and to steer away from oil based moisturizers as they only sit on the skin giving the the impression of moisture with out actually rehydrating the skin.

It was recommended that I purchase the Dermalogica travel kit for Oily skin which costs around £24 then if i was happy with the results I could consider buying the larger bottles cost around £22 each.

The Dermalogica travel kit for Oily skin included the following products:

Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser

This is a thick clay based liquid which doesn't foam up, when applied it has a kind of tingling sensation which was kind of weird but my skin felt really clean when i washed it off.

Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub

This is a skin-polishing exfoliant with natural grains that are meant to remove dulling surface debris from the skin. Normally it would be advised to exfoliate around three times a week however as I have a lot of dead skin I have been advised to exfoliate every day and also use a buff puff.

Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner

I never used a toner before but it has a lovely cool sensation after using the Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub as it contains a refreshing blend of skin repairing aloe, moisture-binding humectants plus soothing lavender, balm mint and arnica.

Dermalogica Active Moist

This is a lightweight, oil-free lotion that is meant to help combat hydration, it looks creamy white and is very runny unlike the Lotions I used previously which were a lot heavier. For this reason I though that I would eventually have that tight dry feeling on my face and need to reapply but I was wrong.

Dermalogica Climate Control Lip Treatment

I do actually suffer from chapped lips and have to regularly moisturise. How ever I am finding this balm to be adequate with out being too heavy.

I intend to continue using the Dermalogica Products until my next facial which I have booked for next month, hopefully by then the effects of using the products on my skin will be more evident.
