Why is AFWL so greedy…

Where have you been you ask, I have been away to visit the queen that is what I would love to say. However the truth is that I am overworked and underpaid, the past year has been hectic for me with nonstop events and shows taking place in the UK and Nigeria. My lovely clients are becoming ever more demanding, so it has left me no time to write. But if I were being truly honest I have been very lazy and have been suffering from writers bloc (AKA I can’t be bothered to write).

This morning though, I woke up feeling inspired and having the urge and the itch to write, so before I lost the urge I quickly opened my laptop and started writing – then it happened. I had to stop because I had no idea of what to write about. I first wanted to write about Obama and then Trump and then Buhari (the president of Nigeria), I have to explain whom he is, as some of you would not know whom the president of Nigeria is, but I am sure you know whom Obama and Donald Trump are. I thought all of that was too political and thought I would be censored by Fashions Finest., So I decided to write about the last 2 days of my life.

This year, Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL as it is fondly called) took a unilateral decision without consultation to pursue world domination, but that was not enough they also issued decrees, edicts and passed laws to extend their domination to also include domination of the universe and its outer dominions and any inhabited or non inhabited planets as Ronke Ademiluyi the founder of AFWL put on her biggest and best event yet with the sole aim of dominating African fashion across the world. It is fair to say that AFWL is without a doubt the biggest African Fashion Week in the world – I know there are some of you that would say that South Africa Fashion Week is bigger. Well I disagree as they are part of the so called official international fashion week schedule, which some of us are not allowed to belong too – I say no more on this subject as I am in a good mood.

That aside AFWL was streamed live across the world by so many media houses including the BBC, Swahili TV, OH TV, the Africa Channel, South African Broadcasting Corporation, Fashion One and hundreds more. I have never seen so many bloggers in my life. Next year I will call it the bloggers convention but they did a great job of updating the world instantaneously as things were happening. I could not believe it, that at the end of the final show I was FORCED to do a catwalk and within seconds it was live and people were commenting on it from different parts of the world. The power of social media, where would we be without you.

I must slightly divert here and talk about people that have nothing to do in their life but complain about the smallest little things they can think of. I recently did an interview for a newspaper in Nigeria about AFWL and I said something to the tune of ‘this will be the best AFWL ever’ and besides everything else written or mentioned in the article the only comment one person could make is that Mr Mahogany (that’s me by the way) you should have said that it would be the best AFWL yet not ever. Even though I went to school and fortunate enough to go to university I am sure my English was correct (but also feel free to correct me) – cos as far as I am concerned if I have done 4 AFWL shows to date and this is the 5th one and I expect it to be the best, am I not allowed to say it will be the best AFWL ever? Seriously!!! I think my main gripe was the fact that this was the only thing they could pick up from the article, no well done, I hope it goes well, more grease to your elbow, don’t overwork, don’t get stressed etc just a correction on my view. hmmmmmm

Anyway correction or no correction this year’s AFWL was the best AFWL EVER, yes I am emphasising the ever as it was a phenomenal show. I know I should not be blowing my own trumpet but if the tune or music is good then you have to blow.

Over the two days of shows over 58 designers showcased including 24 designers that came over from South Africa known as the KZN Fashion Council, SA Collective who truly stole the Friday evening show, recent reports that have come to my attention state that the police are currently planning to charge the South African Collective with theft, they were off the hook. The designs and the designers were colourful, imaginative, innovative and creative. It’s so good to see how far African fashion has come over the past 5 years and I am proud to say that African fashion now owns the world. We had a young 18 year old designer Tuiimila showcase and the entire fashion week was closed by the veteran designer Needle Point and as always she came with her A game. If I were to mention all of the designers I would be here forever, to be honest they all deserve a mention but sadly I can’t but I do take my hat off to each and every one of them.

We had some of the hottest models from around the world featuring in the show, I know it’s not fair to mention some by name but you have to get a feel of how big this show is, you know me even though I should not, I will. Tanya did her 5th straight AFWL show in a row and is the only model to feature in all five seasons, Ruhani came to do the show from Singapore, Victoria from Ghana, Tomi from Nigeria and Aramatou the season 9 winner of Top Model of Colour made her AFWL debut and rocked the catwalk along with the other 40 models that came from all over the UK to participate in the show. However LADIES what is going on, every time Emeka & Hassan two of our male models came onto the catwalk and especially when they were bared chested you all absolutely went wild and literally lost your minds. I would like to say that us men that only have a one pack are just as good as the hunks that had six and eight packs. Seeing how you were responding to them has given me the motivation to go to the gym and do an upgrade from my one pack to a six pack – I can hear you all saying dream on, that is so unfair you should be encouraging me.

Backstage was fun and hectic with Motions as always killing it (do you like my young people slang – ‘killing it’) with the hair and of course Maxine was winding me up over the two days. Abbie May and her makeup team took the makeup to another level and ensured the models looked amazing (sorry I could not avoid using this over used word – too lazy to think of an alternative word, yes I do know I could of used google). Lola, Lola, Lola, yes I said her name three times as she deserves it, she was the head of the AFWL styling team and this was the first time that she did AFWL and despite all of my stress and that of the models and designers she held it together and ensured the models looked absolutely fabulous in the designers clothes. I have no idea of how she did it, because putting the backstage together was like organising a military campaign.

From my limited and extensive knowledge I don’t know of any other Africa Caribbean event that does an event at the Olympia and AFWL should be very proud of their achievements not just about having the courage and the tenacity to take the risk and do it at this very big and VERY EXPENSIVE venue but they have ensured that the event gets bigger and bigger each year. AFWL had over 150 volunteers and interns work on the event, over 80 plus exhibitors, food court that did not stop selling from the moment the doors opened till when they closed (if they gave me a share of their profits I won’t have to work for the next one year).

I must do a big shout out to the AFWL team including Seyi the events manager and her able second in command Joke, Kamari operations, Jo exhibitors, Titi hospitality ( I say no more), CJ entertainment alongside Ike whom put some great acts together, Teju in charge of volunteers, Dami who had boundless energy and just sorted out everything, Anna Maria in charge of press and my fantastic assistant Bili and music produced by the hottest DJ in London Ayo Homdiggy and finally Ricardo whom got stress from EVERYONE and it also seems to be my mission in life to always give him stress as well but by always harassing him that he is taking too long to get the crowd seated, but I will make it up to him by one day giving him the jacket that he wants, he has the unenviable job of having to seat everyone for each show.

The crowd and audience was the best EVER, they dressed to impress, they encouraged the designers and models and they also made sarcastic and horrible comments (I love our people) and dripped saliva all over the floor as their tongues fell out of their mouths whilst drooling over the male models. For nearly all shows it was standing room only and over the two days AFWL had its highest attendance EVER with thousands and thousands attending.

Well this piece is dragging and I think I have to bring it to an end now but I can’t go without firstly saying that we must all take our hats off to Ronke Ademiluyi for putting this event together and taking the risks and having the courage to keep going despite all the hurdles, difficulty in getting sponsorship and covering the costs. Ronke I bow to you.

Lastly I am very happy to announce that during the event I was promoted to Executive Creative Director, I have no idea why I got the promotion but I have been told that it comes with no additional benefits or increase in salary and a lot more work, so life goes on still overworked and underpaid.

Seaweed and Aloe Refreshing Eye Gel

Written by

As I am now 31 years old and I have started to notice my body changing in ways that I am not too happy about, I have found myself frantically searching for a product to remove the bags from under my eyes. I wanted them to have that youthful sparkle once again. For a few weeks I have been using Essentials AA skincare collections Seaweed and Aloe refreshing eye gel. It comes in an easy to carry beige and green bottle with a pump style top and is suitable for all skin types. It soothes the skin and can be used for removing make-up.

eye gel blog

The Seaweed that is in the eye gel is rich in vitamins and minerals and when not being eaten it can be applied directly to the skin. Seaweed is said to both strengthen and soothe skin and also has a natural anti-inflammatory so it keeps redness of the skin to a minimum.

The Aloe in the gel also known as the “plant of immortality” by the Egyptians and has been used in medicines for centuries. It heals wounds while treating many other skin conditions. Unlike other eye gels this one will not break the bank as you can buy it online for only £6.96p.You only need to use a small amount therefore a 50ml bottle could last you a long time. After only using the eye gel a few times I noticed the puffiness around my eyes calming down. My family and friends have commented on my appearance and have been asking what my secret is. I was more than happy to share it with them and tell them that it was Seaweed and Aloe gel from Essentials AA skincare collection. Finally the area around my eyes feel youthful again, they are refreshed and ready for what life has to throw at me.

Vitastiks’s: An Alternative To Cigarettes

Written by

DSC 03051

Most people that smoke are trying to give up. Cigarettes damage your health and are costly. Not to mention that the smell they produce due to the burning tar and chemicals in the tobacco seem to cling to your clothes, walls, furniture and hair. As a smoker these are all things that I loathe about smoking. When I was asked to review Vitastik’s, which are vitamin vaporizers, I was excited. Could this really be a cheaper, healthier alternative to cigarettes? I hoped so.

Each vaporizer came in a different colour and when you puffed on one a light would come on at the end to mimic a real cigarette. Vitastik’s produce no smoke, no tar just flavoured vapor. They are designed to give you the vapor of vitamins A, B, C, D, E, CoQ10 terpenes and phytonutrients through inhalation. As phytonutrients can be found in plants you can see that they are quite natural.

I was sent five different Vitastik’s to try:

Calm- Vanilla and Macha Green Tea:

This had a slight sweet taste to it and it was in fact calming.

Grace- Peppermint and Spearmint:

This tasted minty and reminded me of the mint sweets that restaurants give you at the end of a meal to refresh your mouth.

Relax- Blueberry and Blackcurrant:

If you are a fan of sweet things then this would be the Vitastik for you. This one had a intensely sweet taste to it.

Refresh- Mint and Peppermint:

This had an extremely minty taste and left my mouth feeling quite refreshed after.

Energize-Orange and Grapefruit:

This was my favourite, it had a wonderful fruity smell and taste to it.

I for one will be swapping my cigarettes for Vitastik’s from now on, I can use them indoors knowing that no harm will come to my children and the slight smell that they do produce is fantastic.

How To Look Taller Wearing Flats

I am obsessed with tea, most of the women in my family are. It seems to keep me warm in the winter yet keep me cool in the summer. There is virtually nothing that having a cup of tea will not solve or at least I like to think there isn’t. I imagine that with every sip my problem gets that little bit smaller. So when I was given the opportunity to review Quinteassential’s award winning White Elixir tea I jumped at the chance. The tea is said to promote a smooth complexion and inner glow. It is a white tea infused with Jasmine flowers, gingko leaves and spirulina algae. The Jasmine and gingko complement each other exceedingly well and it contains the perfect amount of Jasmine.

When made the tea has a wonderful aroma and it tastes amazing when you have it both hot and cold. I suggest that when you buy it, you try it both ways. White Elixir tea is what I would use to impress a lunch date or my Mother on the morning of her birthday. This tea is bound to brighten up anyone’s day and comes well presented in a posh colourful box that is suitable to give as a gift to even your fussiest of friends. It really is the perfect tea for all tea lovers.

2015 07 19 1114

How to make White Elixir tea:

1. Boil Kettle
2. Scoop one teaspoon of loose tea and place in one of the tea bags
3. Close teabag with one of the sticks provided
4. Pour boiled water over teabag and leave to brew for two minutes
5. Sip tea and relax

WEARING PINK

Pink, reminds me of being a little girl and as an adult the last thing you want is to look like a little princess when you are wearing it. Here are a few hints and tips on how to wear pink like a woman and not like a little girl.

You just love pink but as a strong career women you do not want to seem to girly. Wearing pink in an office setting, opt for a fitted shift dress or a power suit in the shade that complements your colouring. Stay clear of girlish fabrics like lace, chiffon instead go for silk, cotton or linen.

wearing pink 1

If you are going for a brighter pink shades, can be a bit much in one outfit. So rather go for a splash especially if you are wearing muted colours, that hint of pink will liven it up.

wearing pink 2

Mixing pink printed pieces are great way to spice up the colour. Add elements like contrasting accessories to break the colour.

wearing pink 3

Contrasting textures are a great way, to be less pink Barbie, so pair a cute pink dress with a leather biker jacket for a more edgy look.

wearing pink 5

Keep your look stylish by colour blocking your pinks with neutral colours and complementing bold colours.

Walking On Air Pedicure

Written by

Monday I was invited down to Nice Nails Baby in Clapham Junction to try out their Walking On Air Pedicure. I have to admit I had slightly fallen off with my pedicure game to the point that during our recent heatwave I couldn’t rock my sandals because my toes were far from on point.

Generally I do love a good pedicure as it give me a chance to relax and get pampered but be with work and trying to buy a flat time has not been on my side so when I got the invitation I was delighted to pop down to trendy Clapham to get my feet right.

Nice Nails Baby i.e. located almost directly across from the station inside the Electric Beach Tanning Salon.

I loved the classy yet eclectic décor which was a far cry from the bland and almost clinical décor of most nail shops. Everywhere you looked there was pictures of nail designs to give customers inspiration which had e looking down at my hands wondering if I had time for a quick manicure also but I was pushed for time so I made a mental not to come back another time.

I was greeted by Michelle Duberry who is also Managing Director and founder of Nice Nails Baby and lead to the pedicure room.

After deciding on a colour was sitting pretty soaking my tootise in a warm foot spa then a foot mask was applied and my feet were wrapped in cling film while Michelle and I shot the breeze about everything from fashion to blogging to natural hair journeys and she even recommended a hairdresser to me Result!!

Once the mask was washed off of me feet a foot file was used to buff my feet free of any rough or dry skin. Next my cuticles were pushed back and my nails were cut and shaped.

Before the nail colour was applied a foot scrub was used, followed by lotion and a relaxing foot rub.

Throughout the treatment I felt very comfortable and no discomfort was experienced. The treatment was done to a high standard, the and as I was feeling comfortable the time seemed to fly by.

As my appointment was on a Monday morning I expected it to be quiet however there were a number of people popping in to enquire about appointments. I would love to come back when it was quite busy because I imagine the atmosphere would be laid back and fun. Even though Clapham is bit out my way I explained to Michelle that when it comes to good customer service I am normally happy to go out of my way or pay extra because you want to feel happy with the service especially when it comes to being pampered.

Pedicures start from £22 which I think is totally reasonable and Nice Nails Baby also offers a wide range of other beauty treatments including manicures, eye lash extensions, eyelash tinting, and brow tinting and waxing. They also offer package deals for a number of treatments which is great if you are getting ready for a special event or holiday. There is also a Nail party service where they can come to your house and pamper you and your friends which I thought was an excellent idea for a girly evening.

Lipgloss

 get lippy with gloss

Lip gloss is a staple in every make up bag and we all go through our fair share of lip glosses trying to find just the right one. The qualities that I look for in lip gloss is, easy application, no stickiness and high gloss shine. I found these qualities in two of my favourite lip glosses, NARS and Pure Color by Estee Lauder.

Nars lip glosses are easy to apply with an array of vivid colours, moisturizing, no stickiness and long lasting wear.

NARS

A lip gloss with the power to light up your face, exactly what every girl needs for those no make-up days when you want your face to shine.

Pure in colour, great wear, light and no stickiness. In a variety of great colours allowing you to shine, shimmer or sparkle.

PLEATS

Pleats are bang on trend this season and a great style to bring out the lady in you. It is also one of those styles that works for any shape, age and height.

Make sure that your pleat style flatters your shape

1. The stitched-down pleats lies flat at the top and is an ideal tummy concealer.
2. Accordion pleats are full through the hips, giving you an hourglass effect.
3. If you have big bums, Knife pleats are perfect as it has the least volume thus creating the illusion of a flat bum.

Stitched down pleat

Highlight your waist

To ensure a slimmed down look, always show off the waistband of your skirt, so whatever you pair it with be sure to tuck it in.

For Curvy ladies a light flowy fabric will not add bulk to your hips.
Short Legs, a hemline that is higher in the middle does not cut you off at the calves
Apple shaped, hide your tummy with stitched-down pleats

Use colour for effect, play around with colours to create interesting contrast

When you think of pleats, it is always paired with cute ballet flats but you can go a bit edgy by pairing it with booties, sneakers or metallic heels.

How To Use Lipliner

Written by

lip liner gloss

I am more of a lipstick girl, it is not like I do not like gloss or lip liner, I just have more lipsticks then gloss or lip liner. To be honest I have one lip liner, from Avon and have had it for so long and hardly ever use it.

lip liner1

So the fact that I only have one lip liner got me thinking, maybe I just don’t invest in lip lines because I do not know how or when to use it. So when you do not know, the best thing to do is to learn. So I did some research and hopefully armed with this new knowledge I will start using the one lip liner that I have and hopefully buy some more.

When to use lip liner and what is the best way to apply it?

Lip liner is like your base coat it makes your lipstick last longer and look better. Do use it if you have thin or uneven lips (maybe this is another reason why I have not used mine so much, I do not have uneven or thin lips)
So uneven or thin lips outline your lips with a liner one shade darker than your natural lip colour as this will make it instantly look fuller and more defined. Avoid contouring outside the lines but you can build up your Cupid's bow slightly and tap highlighter over for a plumped up effect.

Use it to stop colour from bleeding

Glossy and moisture rich lipsticks tend to blend more than matte lipsticks so to keep this from happening use a natural or rose toned pencil to line your lips then dab concealer all around your mouth to and set it with loose powder before applying your lipstick.

Go all day and night long

We all want our lipsticks to last all day long to keep it from fading and to avoid that awful ring of colour around your lips when it does fade. Fill in your lips completely with your liner before applying your lipstick, this will act like a sticky tape and hold the colour down longer.

As a substitute

So you mostly have shiny or glossy lipsticks and you want to go matte for the day. Your lip liner will do the trick just for a liner with a thicker and soft tip and with a smudge brush blend it in on your lips.

lip liner tip

Lip liner, gloss or lipsticks always looks better on smooth lips so exfoliate and moisturize lips beforehand you can either use your toothbrush to gently exfoliate, do it in a circular motion or make a DIY brown sugar and oil sugar scrub. Moisturise your lips with a lip balm before applying or every night before going to bed.

Okay as they say, knowledge is power, Lip liner here I come, ready to use and abuse you.

The Top Knot

From super slicked back, to loose and dishevelled, the top knot is still a favourite for work, party or just hanging out.

Placement is key when creating a top knot, it should sit flat on the top of your head and not too far back on your head and the hair in the back must be completely smooth.

Once your hair is up in a ponytail backcomb the ponytail for fluffiness and then twist the hair around your elastic band and secure with hair pins. Use hairspray to hold it all in place.

Look Taller, short girls, wearing your hair in a top knot gives the impression that you are taller as it creates a vertical line and adds inches to your size.

Get Your Man Out Of His Style Rut

Written by

Unlike us, fashionista, our better halves does not always care that their style and look says a lot about them and that looking good makes you feel good and confident about yourself.

I believe that there are 2 types of guys, the ones that does not care about their personal style and image and secondly the ones to whom personal style and grooming is everything.

Dating a guy in the first category, can be a nail biting experience for any on-trend stylist fashionista.

Because you want your man to look good when you are going out but you also do not want him to feel like you are trying to change him.
So what is a girl to do? Do you subtly nudge him by sneaking in new pieces into his wardrobe that you would like him to wear and suggest he wears them every time you go out or bombard him with images of well-dressed men and not so subtly tell him that, that is what you would like him to wear and look like when you go out.

If you have taken it upon yourself to be your man’s personal stylist, here are three basic rules to teach him.

Get The Fit Right

Men want to be comfortable in what they are wearing, so “fit” is not so important to them, as they might find that wearing things that are too tight are for females. So get rid of all those baggy jeans and oversized t-shirts and any items that are outdated. Get him to buy pieces that are more fitted to his body types and shows of his sculpted body (that is if he works out, if not get him to start going to the gym and eating healthy).

Formal pieces, like suits, nothing looks worse than a suit that hangs of your man’s body. Get it tailored for him. A well fitted suit oozes sexiness on any man.

fit

The same applies to casual pieces like jeans, t-shirts and shorts, you do not want to go to tight but when something fits right your man will look like a million dollars even when the items he is wearing is from the high street.

It's All In The Details

Start by finding colours that match his skin tone. When you guys are out shopping hold different coloured t-shirt up to his face and watch what the colour does when you hold it up to his face, does his eye brighten up and does it bring out his features or does the colour make him look washed out. Choosing the right colours that matches his eyes, hair and skin tone can make a huge difference in your man’s appearance.

detail

Shoes, belt and ties these are his finishing touches and gets noticed a lot more. So if he is going for a casual jeans and t-shirt look, pair it with a great pair of loafers and a good belt. As with women, accessories completes any outfit, so you would want his accessories to bring his look together, taking him from 0 to 100 in seconds.

Head to Toe Grooming

Start by introducing him to a cleansing routine, because as his lady, you know that good skin start with cleanse and moisturise.
This does not need to cost a lot of money, the L’Oréal for men range are very good and affordable and if you can get him to start introducing this into his daily routine, he will defiantly see the effects in the long run.

Well-kept Hands And Feet
A manicure and pedicure every now and then is never a bad idea, as a man with long finger and toe nails are not a pretty sight and can easily deflate his well put together look. Along with well-kept hand and feet goes clean and well cut hair and beard (if your man wears a beard).
Do not overdo it on the fragrance, I am sure that your man likes to smell nice and you like it when he smells nice. But do not let him overdo it on the fragrance, so much, you do not want then everyone else to walk out as soon as he walk in because the smell is to over powering. The golden rule is two or three sprays is more than enough.

Mud Mask

Introduce him to clay masks, getting him to apply a clay face mask once a week will improve the texture and tone of his skin, as it removes all unwanted impurities such as oil and dirt.

MUD MASK

You will never really be able to change your man but you can teach him that looking good is not such a bad thing because there is nothing better than showing off your well-dressed confident man.

Henna tattoo design

Written by

I have always wanted a tattoo, but it not so much the pain, it’s just that it is permanent that puts me off the idea. So I decided to go for something that is not so permanent but still beautiful, a henna tattoo.

The use of henna for body art has been used for centuries with the ancient Egyptians and Indian women using this form of temporary tattoos for religious ceremonies, wedding festivals, and body adornment.

I found the lovely Yamini Mehendi /Henna artist on facebook and we met up in Starbucks and while enjoying a cup of coffee she completed my beautiful henna tattoo.

She created a beautiful design, from her organic henna which she produces herself. I was delighted to see the finished product and how quickly she was able to do the intricate designs.

Yamini has a growing clientele as Henna body art has become a very popular trend among western women. Many of her clientele come to her with their own design ideas or like in my case she can easily create a design for you on the spot.

Another trend that I love is the temporary body art, and wanting to keep with the Henna I fell in love with the Vandana collection from Bohemian jewellery tattoos.

Bohemian Jewellery tattoos has a range of designs from classy, edgy boho chic to festive Greek fun.

There Vandana collection takes its inspiration from Henna traditions, beautifully detailed with mixed metallic and hints of black. The 4 sheets of transfers tattoo are perfect to mix and match and the metallic colours sets off beautifully against your skin tone and enhance any outfit with a touch of edginess and sexy elegance.
The designs are great and you can make it the focal point of your entire look whether it a beach day look or a night out look.

Whether you’re planning a destination wedding to a sunny locale or are holding your wedding during the popular summer months, you’ll want to make sure that you’re cool, comfortable, and gorgeous on your special day. Here are a few tips to help you select a wedding gown that’s both stylish and practical in hot weather.

screen shot 2011 01 18 at 2 37 0

Go Strapless

Strapless wedding dresses are popular enough in cool weather weddings for their figure flattering fit, but they’re particularly useful for keeping cool when the sun’s blazing. Keep your neck, arms, and shoulders bare to take advantage of cooling breezes while showing off your best assets at the same time. Strapless dresses are far from a one-style affair – you can vary the neckline to create balance. For example, ruching can enhance a small bust, while sweetheart necklines draw the eye up and away from a larger bottom.

Choose Breathable Fabrics

Many traditional wedding gown styles are surprisingly lightweight, particularly when fashioned out of light, breathable fabrics. If you’re planning a summer wedding, avoid synthetic fabrics like the plague. These will weigh you down and make you sweat. Instead, opt for materials like chiffon, organza, tulle, silk, or lace. These let your body breathe on a day when you’re already more prone to breaking a sweat.

2015 07 01 1413

Consider Shorter Length

Many of the most iconic wedding dresses aren’t necessarily floor-length. Take a look at this infographic from Vashi to see a range of famous dresses in different lengths. Celebs including Marilyn Monroe, Keira Knightley, and Cindy Crawford all opted for dresses at or above the knee. If you’re not ready to wear a shift or prom dress in a formal setting, you could choose to change out of your main wedding dress into a shorter, breezier, and cooler dress for the reception!

Nail Tips

Written by

NAILS1

A women’s journey with nail polish starts as a young girl, the little Barbie set of nail polish which you would get as a gift and you would paint your little nails and your friend’s nails. So much fun!! But those days making a mess of it, was fun as you get to do it all over again. But now with our busy lives and wanting your nails dry five minutes ago and nails polish smudges just not going with your OOTD. (outfit of the day)
Here some quick tips for those messy painting and for a quick dry fix

Dip Your Tips

This is a great tip for doing your nails on the run, just run your nails under cold water or place it in a bowl with cold water, for a few minutes. Then, gently touch your nails to feel if they are dry. If the polish still feel a bit tacky, put it back under for another few minutes.

71Ufq9ZlYEL. SL1500

Vaseline

Hate it when your polish just goes all over, you can avoid that by lining your nails with Vaseline or white craft glue before you apply your nail polish.

Another quick dry, cooking spray –

Non -stick cooking spray is another great tip to dry your polish fast.

The one I often do, is to fix a smudge by adjusting it with the tip of my tongue

Roll Rather Than Shake

I often do this, I shake the polish before applying it but it is better to roll it, to avoid air bubbles forming.

I hate it when my nail polish is too thick as applying it becomes messy, so my last tip is to place your nail polish in the fridge for 15 minutes before applying it. As this will thin it out and make it easier to apply.

What to wear to a wedding

Written by

I am sure that you have received at least one wedding invitation for this summer, it is the season after all. But attending a wedding comes with its own do’s and don’ts like;

1. Do not wear white

You really do not want to show up the bride, but do opt for something like this, Boat neck V cut back slit floral dress. Love this for an afternoon garden wedding.

wedding look

Available at www.romwe.com

2. No wearing Red

Red is bold and always makes the wearer stand out and as this is the bride’s day and all eyes needs to be on her. Why not go for this floral flare dress in black with red floral detail. It is not all red so you will still be safe.

wedding 4

3. Do not overlook the invitations dress code

OH, what a blunder this will be, as the eyes will be on you for all the wrong reasons. For a formal black tie dress code a cocktail dress is required. If you are keeping it simple, this black irregular cut out lace hem is a good choice.

If it the dress code is relaxed colourful summer dress attire; option 1 this spaghetti strap asymmetrical dress would be my first pick

Option 2 I love this stand collar chiffon pleated dress, it’s summery and floaty

Option 3 Vintage Floral chiffon pleated dress, no fuss beauty

4. Do not be a carbon copy of the Bridesmaids

I do not think that this is a mistake that any one wants to make, but to help you avoid it, a list of the top wedding colour schemes for 2015. So if possible ask the bride or one of the bridesmaids what the colour scheme is, so you can avoid looking like an extra bridesmaid.

Halter back split floral dress

5. No inappropriate attire

The wedding is a bit classier then the Hen night or a girls club night so dress according to the occasion. You also do not want to look like you just stepped out of a convent all covered up. Keep with the dress code and make sure that nothing is hanging out but if you are showing some skin make sure that it is done in a way that does not offend some older guest or keep all eyes on you and not the bride.

When you do get that invitation in the post have a look at the dress code on the invitation. Stick with the above rules and you and the bride will both be happy on her big day.

How to pack for a sun holiday

Written by

packing for summer holidays

“We are going on a summer holiday, la, la, la!!! “ Yes!! That exciting summer holiday is looming, time for some valuable “you time”.
The only snag is deciding what to pack. You have your suitcase ready and all your favorite holiday pieces from last year along with the new stuff you bought, is laid out on the bed and you are trying to figure out how on earth are you going to get it all into one suitcase.
I sense that there is a bit of panic, but there is no need to panic. All you need is a bit of skilful organizing and voila!!

summerpacking

Here is some basic tips for you to follow;

1. Make a list, write down each day of your trip and what you have planned to do on that day, lunch, sightseeing, sport or just lying on the beach or next to the pool. Now for each of these activities jot down what you want to wear, as this will show you what you can wear, for example the same pair of trouser, dress or skirt, can you wear it at least twice during your holiday. This will leaves more space in your suitcase.

2. Now with your list, lay out all your pieces and see how each pieces co-ordinates with another pieces. Do not take any pieces that does not match any of the items that you have picked and laid out. For example do not take that bright green top if you are not taking anything that matches with it.

3. Mixing colours is perfect for summer but you do not need to take all the colours in your wardrobe, just pack the key pieces that you know you can mix and match.

4. Keep your trousers and jackets in neutral shades like white, cream, navy and denim as it make is easier to match your tops.
5. Economise on space by putting items like shower gel into smaller containers or folding/rolling clothes neatly, as you might need space for items that you bought on your holidays.

6. Pack your shoes, like 1 pair of heels, sandals and flip flops, at the bottom of your suitcase and use the corners of your suitcase for small items like underwear.

7. Take at least one or two scarves, as you can wear it as a mini skirt over your bikini or as a turban to protect your hair from sun damage
Now that your suitcase is packed, all that is left, is for you to start counting down the days to your sun holiday.

Black is Beautiful

Written by

Black is beautiful 1

Black is mysterious, it’s elegant and sophisticated.

Putting on a black suit can make you feel in control as it hides all fear, and a LBD makes you feel sexy.
Black is slimming as it blurs out any and all lines and leaves no shadows, as it absorbs rather than reflects light, thus creating a balanced, sleek and slimmed down appearance.

Although is not really considered a colour, it is and has always been the number one go to colour for most women.
In the famous words of Coco Chanel “A women needs just three things; a black dress, a black sweater, and, on her arm a man she loves”

Chanel simplified women’s fashion during 1926 when Vogue magazine published a drawing by her of a simple Black dress. The LBD then lived on through the designs of Versace, YSL and the most famous LBD worn by Audrey Hepburn in 1961, designed by Givenchy for the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

“Black is Beautiful” wear it proudly!!!

blacknew

Here are so tips, if black is your go to colour

Make sure it’s the right fit, when wearing black on black, the fit of your pieces are important. Remember black is slimming so your pieces can be more fitting rather than shapeless.

Stay clear of clingy shiny fabrics like lycra, sequins or satin as it will creates shadow and reflection that will highlight any lumps and bumps that you want to hide.

Pair different textures and fabrics

Wearing black of black creates a straight vertical line

When wearing black in summer, choose pieces that are season appropriate, like chiffon, silk and linen and heavier fabrics like wool for winter.

Spice it up with bold accessories, like jewellery, and we all know a red lip or leopard print shoe always looks good against black

Switch between day and night by making little changes, like lipstick colour, when wearing a LBD from work to after work cocktails. Try a bold deep red for night and a nude lip stain for day

Tama Ra Soiree Makeup Look

Written by

Last Saturday saw myself and my talented team working our magic at the 2nd edition of Tama Ra Soiree. The event is held every first Saturday of the month in the heart of London at the Holiday Inn, Bloomsbury.

Guests are treated to a night of music, art and live entertainment with an all you can eat Caribbean buffet – yummy!

Fashions Finest teamed up with with CEO Of Tama Ra Soiree Hazel Jordan to bring a showcase of fashion at the event. Each event features a different designer with their latest collections modelled by models in a catwalk showcase around the grand luxurious event room.

My job is to design a suitable makeup and hair look to match the designer that month and their wonderful collection.

Last Saturday we had the pleasure of working with Helen Woolams of Hellavagirl and her sequinned collection. Glitz, glam and glamour are just a few words that spring to mind when thinking of Helen’s collection.

To match her designs I knew I had to create a look that was as equally stunning as her glorious gowns. GLITTER!!

I chose glitter as the main focus for the makeup. Sparkling colours to match the sparkling sequins in the designs – perfect! I talked to my team about picking colours from the designs and incorporating one colour into the glitter eye makeup. Keeping the rest of the makeup minimal so that the eyes really popped with the dresses, I chose a natural nude lip with lots of gloss to enhance the glamorous look even more. Fresh dewy slightly highlighted skin and a pop of blush is all that was needed for the skin. Hair was kept simple popped back into a bun or pony or left natural.

Weekend Look Inspiration

Written by

 ITS THE FWEEKEND

It’s the Freaking Weekend, Yeah!!! Time to get rid of those boring office wear and show off. I got you covered with some weekend look inspiration, whether you are going to lunch with friends, shopping, drinks and dancing or hanging out poolside.

My favs are boxy tops and co-ords and off course finding just the right swimsuit for my beach debut. Here are some weekend inspiration and just some basic tips for buying your swimsuit.

ITS THE FWEEKEND 1

Boxy tops are so versatile, you can pair them with basically everything. Styled with shorts for a fun look. Keep them cropped when wearing them with high-waisted shorts and if shorts are not your thing try a skinny jeans, it will do wonders for your legs as it will elongate your legs, making them look longer. I especially like this printed one from Romwe, its playful and will look great with a mini skirt, shorts or skinny jeans.

Dots are all the rage so have fun in this dotted shorts form Romwe, they will even look great with a pair of heels for a night of fun.

ITS THE FWEEKEND 2

Co-ords are just great, they make dressing so much easier and work well for day or night. Pair them with heels or wedges for a more dressed up look or flat/sandals for a more casual day look.

ITS THE FWEEKEND 3

When it comes to swimsuits, make sure to choose one that shows of your best bits and hides the not so best bits. The key is to find a swimsuit that balances your proportions, so know your body shape before shopping for your swimsuit.

The Pear Shape

You are curvy at the hips and thighs and smaller on the top. Go for a bottom that falls just below the largest part of the upper leg and for the top go for a plunging neckline that draws the eyes to your top part and away from the bottom.

Large Bust

Go for underwired or moulded cups and stay clear of embellishments because you want the eye away from your bust. Avoid ruffles or embellishments as this will just draw attention to your large bust.

Small Bust

Go for embellished or detailed tops to create an illusion of a larger bust

Apple Shape

You carry more weight around your midsection, so you want to conceal your tummy area. Choose high-waisted or tankini styles to conceal your tummy.

Curvy

You want to highlight your curves but still gives enough support. You want to stay away from monokinis or string bikinis with thicker ties, as this will just accentuate your widest, hips area.

An asymmetrical swim suits will draw the eye towards your neckline and in turn highlighting the line from your neck to your collarbone. Also try to colour block, one colour for your top and another for your bottom, this will highlight your shape.

It is important to know your shape, even for everyday shopping. But in the case of swimwear it is just a little bit more important, because you are so much more exposed and you want to look and show off your best bits.

My philosophy, weekends are for having fun. Let your hair loose, and hide that boring week wear in the back of your closet. Choose a look that will suit your personality and have fun with it and remember keep smiling because a killer smile is always in fashion.

S/S 2015 summer make-up trends – TIP 2

Written by

I bring you my 2nd hottest summer make-up trend that you can achieve in minutes….

Trend two…. Soften those lips

By soften I don't mean keeping those luscious lips of yours soft, but of course that goes without saying.. Always use a lip scrub twice a week and balm daily throughout the day, but what I mean is keep those lipstick colours slightly smudged this season. You want to create a soft focused look on the lips.. Perfectly straight bold lip line is out and slightly smudged long wear looking lips is in.

SS 15 tip 2

Trick

Apply your lipstick how you would normally, don't concentrate on creating the perfect straight line as that's not required for this hot look, instead apply quickly. This may be enough to create the smudged effect or if it's not simply take a cotton bud and roll inwards along the lip line. This will diffuse the edges making them look smoking hot and smudged. Simple.. Now you're ready to show off your beautiful lips in this seasons hottest lip trend.

IMG 2065 dramatic

In the words of Marilyn Monroe, “give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world” Buqisi-Ruux shoes will not only help you to conquer the world but it will make you feel like a queen.

The label draws inspiration from African art, Beauty and Culture, Buqisi-Ruux shoes are a true representation of the vibrancy, diversity and boldness that is the African continent.

The label is the brainchild of three sisters Lynn Bugari, Tetsi Bugari and Nuba Elamin, who had a passion to make all women feel like royalty and to share their love and pride in the African continent and its heritage.

The name, Buqisi-Ruux, symbolizes what these three sisters find important, to inspire and empower women with the name meaning "Queen of the Village". Buqisi comes from an ancient Egyptian word meaning Queen while Ruux represents their home-town Rukungiri, (Kenya).

The Ankara printed heels are custom made, with each shoe named after strong African women, who have and continue to inspire those around them.

Not every fashionista love sneakers, because they do not really tie an outfit together like a pair of snazzy sexy heels. But whether you love or hate them, they do add a certain pizazz to any outfit.

Sneakers can be a great way to change up your look, especially if tend to gravitate towards the same look day after day. Switch things up with a pair of crafty and trendy sneakers. Pair it with everything from skirts, pants, dresses and everything else in between in your closet. Sneakers gives a sporty vibe to your look but you can still maintain your girly look.
