Top Trends For Spring/Summer 2011

Colour is the new black! The palette for this season is super intense with bright orange, red, turquoise, pink, and yellow. Loud and proud colour creates a dynamic, confident look.

The bright colour trend was seen at the Spring 2011 runways at Peter Som, Karen Walker, Christopher Kane, Rachel Roy, Jil Sander, Proenza Schouler, Prabal Gurung, and Z Spoke.

"The best colour in the whole world, is the one that looks good, on you!" - C.Chanel

What is "colour blocking"? Basically, it's the concept of mixing and matching the bold colours. Bold single block colours are a key look for the Spring/Summer 2011. A lot of designs seen on the catwalk had a very clean cut and a super intense eye-popping colour palette: vermillion orange, fuschia pink, royal blue, daffodil yellow, purple and lime green. This season we are going to brighten up the look and wear two or more vivid colours together; mix colours from the same family or go one step further and use the contrasting ones.
This trend is a fresh breeze of inspiration and one of the loudest and boldest catwalk looks.

It's all about fun, imagination and creativity. Be brave and adventurous – forget the rules and experiment with your new look.
  • Don't wear more then three neon colours together. The look you create should be eye catching and attention grabbing, but not too shocking.
  • Keep your accessories simple and in neutral colours. You don't want to overdue it with too much jewellery.
  • Don't be afraid to use colours that usually don't go together - like pink with red, purple with lime green or orange with yellow. Remember: "The brighter, the better".
Colour blocking trend was seen on the Spring 2011 runways at Marc Jacobs, Christian Dior, Sophia Kokosalaki, Lanvin, Dries Van Noten, Marni, Sinha-Stanic, Salvatore Ferragamo, Josh Goot, Richard Nicoll, Luella, John Galliano, Ossie Clark, and Gucci.

Minimal white trend - made popular by Michael Kors - will be one of the top trends this season. Classic clean cuts are a wonderful alternative for those who are fans of a simpler and more versatile look. The classic lines and undeniable elegance of these items have
determined many famous designers to include variations of this trend in their collections in many different forms: from romantic outfits to clean geometric lines and futuristic or postmodern influences.
Minimal white look is fresh, youthful and very stylish. It doesn't require many accessories as it's all about form and shape. Simple dresses, trousers, shirts - you can combine different pieces together as long as you stick to one rule: don't add another colour. Keep it all white
and simple.

This trend was seen on the Spring 2011 runways at Alexander Wang, VPL, Rag & Bone, Calvin Klein, D&G, Chloe, Celine, BCBG Max Azria, Versace, Sportmax, Stella McCartney and Michael Kors.

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" - Leonardo Da Vinci

A lot of designers got inspired by East this season and included many elements of traditional Asian (mainly Chinese and Japanese) wear in their Spring/Summer 2011 collections. Think:

sophistication, luxury and elegance. Very fine and luxurious materials like satin, silk, velvet. Sleek tailoring, delicate lace, hand-sewn embellishment, mandarin collars, high leg slits and kimono jackets. Traditional cheongsam shape and Art Deco influences.

Orient Express trend was seen on the Spring 2011 runways at Haider Ackermann, Sonia Rykiel, Alberta Ferretti, Marc Jacobs, Celine, Louis Vuitton, Carolina Herrera and Chanel.
5. '70s GLAMOUR

When it comes to '70s, there are two main looks that can be distinguished in this trend: '70s bohemian and '70s sophisticated glamour. This season fashion is concentrating on the latter and brings back some key elements for this look like long dresses, huge round hats or highwaist pants with elegant blouses.

Sophisticated '70s look could be seen both on catwalk and in many Spring fashion editorials. It can bring that desired vintage look to our wardrobe. AN underlying confidence is the key to this look. There is boldness, independence and an air of sexuality (think: Bianca Jagger at
Studio 54 or Ali MacGraw). Exotic jewellery and super-high platforms are the must-have accessories for this look.
Key elements of '70s Glamour look:

• fabrics like silk and satin (shimmering version with a metallic thread at night)
• high-waisted wide-leg trousers
• jumpsuits
• hot pants
• neat-bow blouses
• roll neck sweaters
• sexy classic halter tops
• vests
• long dresses
• platforms
• round hats
• beaded necklaces
• big, statement ;leather belts
• hairstyles: long flowing hair, a sleek longer bob or masses of bouncy curls

This trend was seen on the Spring 2011 runways at Marc Jacobs, Jason Wu, Thakoon, Rodante, Derek Lam, Tory Burch, Paul & Joe, Anna Sui, Andrew GN, Etro, Emilio Pucci, and Roberto Cavalli.

Maxi skirts and dresses. Easy-flowing gowns. A refreshing change from the usual short minis. The new lean silhouette is sexy and elegant at the same time.
This trend was seen on the Spring 2011 runways at Diane von Furstenberg, Jil Sander, DVF, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, DKNY, Givenchy, Dries van Noten, Proenza Schouler, Blumarine, Roberto Cavalli, Rag & Bone, Helmut Lang, Salvatore Ferragamo, Emilio Pucci, Victoria Beckham, Alberta Ferretti, Max Azria, Halston, Lanvin, and Nicole Miller.

It seems that denim will never go out of style. It is just one of those fabrics that seems to constantly show up in different trends and fashion scenes. Denim fashion is timeless, partly because denim is extremely comfortable and durable, can be worn casually by everyone
regardless of age and can be bought on just about any budget. This is a trend that everyone can relate to.

Must-have buy for this season: denim shorts.

Blue jeans trend was seen on the Spring 2011 runways at Derek Lam, Celine, Thakoon, D&G, Celine, Iceberg, Stella McCartney, and Moschino.

This Spring/Summer trend has a playful and fun feel to it and it's perfect for those who treat fashion less seriously and are open to experiment with different looks. Colourful stripes appeared on catwalk on everything from clothing to accessories. Sporty and nautical, skinny to bold and bright, black and white to technicolour, they were often seen mixed with a contrasting print.

This trend was seen on the Spring 2011 runways at Jason Wu, Jil Sander, Marc Jacobs, Sportmax, Prada, Versus, and Vivienne Westwood.

From tribal-inspired and animal prints to bold geometrics, vibrant abstract patterns and the sweet fruit prints at Suno and Prada. Think bigger, more playful and expressive than ever.

This season many designers expertly mix head-turning prints together. Adding just one printed piece to your Spring wardrobe works just as well. But make sure it's loud and bold!

Eclectic chic trend was seen on the Spring 2011 runways at Burberry Stella McCartney, Proenza Schouler, Prada, Givenchy, Diane von Furstenberg, Suno, and Z Spoke.

The lounge wear-inspired trend with flowing long skirts, sheer loose-fitting tops and pajamastyle pants. Casual and fluid, sexy and very appealing, however not that easy to pull off as other trends for the season. Colours: white and pastel, a cool palette of icy and
monochromatic neutrals like sand, bone and nude. Think: loose and comfortable, yet still sexy and feminine.
Key elements:

• nightgown-esque slip dresses
• drapey weekend trousers
• matching printed tops and bottoms

This trend was seen on the Spring 2011 runways at Karen Walker, Vena Cava, Thakoon, Ralph Lauren, BCBG Max Azria, Proenza Schouler, D&G, Donna Karan and Narciso Rodriguez.
