This week, Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen officially retired from the runway after over 20 years in fashion.

The 34 year old emotionally said goodbye at São Paulo Fashion Week at the Colcci show, with her parents and husband watching proudly on the front row. Since bursting onto the fashion scene in the early 2000s, Gisele has earned herself pride of place as the highest paid model in the world with an estimated fortune of around $230 million. And after numerous turns on the catwalks of Chanel, Versace, Balenciaga and Stella McCartney to name just a few as well as being a famed Victoria Secret angel for 7 years, it's understandable that she has decided now is the right time to stop the gruelling international catwalk circuit. Yet the supermodel will still continue to work in 'other facets of the industry,' according to her statement on Instagram.

Gisele, known as the 'Brazilian body' to some, was a pioneer on the catwalk as well as in the fashion industry in general. She was told she would never succeed as a model as her nose was too large and her body didn't fit the type favoured by modelling agencies. Yet at the age of 14, Gisele was scouted and became one of the first 'curvier' catwalk models, after the heroin chic look of the 90's and paved the way for many more Brazilian models such as Allesandra Ambrosio, Isabelli Fontana and Adriana Lima.

Take a look through some of Gisele's most iconic moments on the catwalk.
