Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong'o, David Oyelowo, director Mira Nair and Ugandan-Belizean executive producer for Disney, Tendo Nagenda, attended the Odeon Leicester Square for the European premiere of QUEEN OF KATWE as part of the BFI London Film Festival.

QUEEN OF KATWE is the story of Phiona Mutesi, played by Madina Nalwanga, the Ugandan girl whose discovery of the game of chess was to lead her to world fame and out of Katwe, a festering slum on the edge of Kampala.

The film avoids the sugary pitfalls of a rags-to-riches saga by showing the daily struggles and triumphs of four children and their indomitable mother, played by Nyong'o, in a Kampala where the poor cannot afford hospital bills and a house can be swept away in a monsoon. Uganda resident Mira Nair weaves a credible tapestry set in Africa which has universal truths and appeal.
