Going on a first date can be a little bit overwhelming.

As well as deciding on the perfect activity — something that’s interesting but doesn’t stop you from getting to know each other — you’ll also need to decide on the perfect outfit.

With coffee becoming a top trend in the UK, coffee dates are on the rise. In 2015, Starbucks was named the most popular destination for a first date.

Coffee shops can normalise a date and remove any added pressure – but how should you dress? Providing some style inspiration ahead of your next big date is global designer, Ralph Lauren:

Dressing Casually

If you’re heading out on a coffee shop date, everything is much more at ease allowing you to wear jeans and flats!

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to womenswear and dates. For a casual look, go for dark denim jeans and canvas trainers — or maybe even a flat ankle boot? On top, keep it simple and cosy by layering a jumper over a checked shirt. Choose complementing colours — for example, if your shirt is predominantly red checks, contrast with a navy sweater.

Going All Out

Don’t think that because we’re now in autumn you must leave the fancy dresses behind. Rather, it simply provides you with more style possibilities.

A transitional piece of clothing that is appropriate in autumn would be the denim shirt dresses that were popular in summer this year! Instead of wearing them with sandals, add an autumnal vibe with chunky tights and ankle boots with a block heel. You could even throw over a cardigan, too.

Be bold and playful with your style — don’t miss out on the opportunity of wearing prints and patterns. Dark florals are perfect for mastering this season’s grunge-inspired trend. Of course, checks and plaid patterns emerge every autumn/winter and 2017 is set to be no different. To avoid clashing prints, keep other items in your outfit muted.

Comfort And Confidence

Prioritise your comfort. If you’re heading out, wearing an impractical outfit will show. Your discomfort will resonate with your date and, whether you intend to or not, you may find yourself losing focus on what they are saying.

Confidence is key on a date and feeling good about yourself is essential, so don’t hesitate on wearing something old that people seem to love. If you feel good, you’ll look good!
