The Met Gala and what to expect for this year

It is that time of the year when creativity and thinking out of the box is being embraced by all haute couture houses with many opportunities for new designers to take on the fashion industry. It is a time celebrated by all the fashion fanatics out there: the announcement of this year’s theme for the Met Gala, the biggest night of the year in the fashion world.

The museum announces this year’s theme of the Met Gala and the topic of the exhibition is, In America: An Anthology of Fashion, and the gala marks the celebration of its opening.

What is the Met Gala?

The Met Gala is a major fundraising event with celebrities being part of every single aspect of the event. Organised with Anna Wintour as a chair of the event and attended by celebrities like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and Liza Koshy, the gala displays outfits by all the famous luxury fashion houses like Balenciaga, Prada and Gucci. However, its importance extends far beyond the huge amount of money raised and all the social media presence. At the event we see the intersection of art as fashion and fashion as art, demonstrating how they are essential components of our cultural fabric. The theme of each year is based on the topic of the exhibition and the gala marks the celebration of its opening.

What makes the Met Gala important?

The Met Gala is mostly known for fashion and the display of over the top memorable celebrity looks. We should not forget that it is also a charity event that raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute thanks to the standard ticket purchase. The party and exhibition are sponsored by various names and brands that support the fashion industry and all of the money from ticket sales go to the Costume Institute. This department is the only one from the Metropolitan Museum that is self-funded because ever since the Costume Institute was established, there have been debates about whether fashion is a form of art. The goal of the event is to highlight all those aspects of designing a garment that makes it an art piece.

5 Common Mistakes When it Comes to Fashion

1. Avoiding Wearing More Than One Bold Colour

It is a common misconception that you can only wear one bold colour at a time at the risk of visual offence. However, a phenomenon has hit the 2018 runways known as colour blocking, a technique that allows you to go daring with your bold colours and yes, wear them at the same time. Colour blocking is when a garment or outfit is composed of finite blocks of colour. Leading designers have revisited this trend which was hugely popular in the 1960’s and 80’s by adding a modern twist to create unique and exciting styles that have been adopted by high-street retail. It may seem as though it is not the easiest trend to pull off however with a little guidance, you can ditch the old habits of wearing one colour at a time and start colour-blocking.

A top tip when it comes to colour blocking is to wear a belt. The general rule for ladies designer belts this season is the bigger the better. This is perfect when it comes to colour blocking as a thick black or brown belt will neutralise and break up the bold colours, as well as accentuate the waistline.

2. Same Sizing It for Everything

Sizing can vary dramatically according to the store, brand and item of clothing so it is important that you don’t always go for a set size as this can lead to ill-fitting clothes which is a definite fashion mistake. Cheaper clothing typically fits way bigger so instead of worrying about numbers, it is better to pay attention to how things look on your body. Purchasing clothes that fit a desired weight is also a big mistake when it comes to fashion as aspirational shopping is not only a waste of money, but a waste of space in the wardrobe as the clothes you buy sit unused until you reach your fitness goals. It is much smarter to invest in your new wardrobe once you have reached your fitness goals.

In order to choose the right size, it is always best to try the clothes on when you are in the shop to avoid disappointment when you get home and another trip to return the ill fitted items. Make use of the sizing charts and ignore the tags as this will give you a more accurate size guiding designed to be more personalized to your body shape and size.

3. Believing that Menswear Should be Worn by Just Men

A trend that has dominated the winter fashion season is the oversized look, whether this be sweatshirts, t-shirts or coats. When looking for oversized items, it is always a good idea to have a look in the mens section as this can often give you the perfect oversized fit that you are looking for.
A classic way to transform menswear into womenswear is by ditching the dress and wearing a men’s shirt as an alternative. This looks super cute with bare legs and some heels to add some femininity to the shirt, whilst still innkeeping with the shirts formal masculinity. Shapeless blazers with large shoulder pads can also very easily transform a boring outfit into something cute and chic perfect for a smart-casual vibe.

4. Low Waist Jeans with Crop Top

A trend from the 90s and 2000s that should most certainly be left there. Crop tops can still be part of the necessity section in the wardrobe, along with low rise jeans however the two should no-longer be paired no matter how much you like your stomach. Pair your crop-top with a high-waisted pair of jeans as this is super flattering for the figure and accentuates your waistline. High-waisted trousers also give the illusion of an elongated lower body tricking the eye into thinking you are taller and slimmer.

5. Different Belt and Shoe Colour

This rule should be taken loosely as it doesn’t always apply. If your belt is neutral coloured such as black or brown, then wear whatever coloured shoe you wish. A black belt with some leopard print boots would work really well together as long as the rest of the outfit remains neutral and black. A bold belt and bold coloured shoes should be avoided as these will clash. When it comes to bold prints it is best to have one piece that is centre of attention, instead of two pieces fighting for attention.

Autumn 2018 Fashion Trends You Can Shop Right Now

Autumn 2018 Fashion Trends You Can Shop Right Now

Even though the fashion month is in full swing, we won’t be seeing those trends ‘come to life’ for months to come, but that’s perfectly fine, as there is an entire universe of fall trends that are just getting their place in the limelight and are just waiting for us to shop and flaunt them. Given how inspired and inspirational, not to mention far from drab and inconspicuous the autumn 2018 trends are, there is no chance you won’t shine and make yourself feel just a little bit better in amazing clothing that spites the autumn, which, let’s face it, can be gloomy sometimes.

There is a plethora of trends, but we have chosen the very best for you, and the best part is, they are now all yours for the picking, so pick away and go dazzle.

You’ll Love It

Whether we’re keen on a particular pattern or not, the runways have a way of making us inclined towards it once we see it on the models. Such is the case with animal print, about which opinions have been heavily divided, but more and more people are giving in to the trend. A statement leopard print coat seems to be all the rage right now, at least according to the street style section, and we have to say, it looks pretty darn classy when worn with neutral colors. However, if this isn’t really your cup of tea, you can always embrace the trend in a more subtle manner, with a pair of leopard print ankle boots for instance, which are enough to elevate an outfit but not as risky as a larger garment, so you don’t run the risk of making a fashion mistake.

Puff It Up

One of the most romantic trends, at least in our opinion, is the puff-sleeve trend that has been spotted on a number of garments, from simple tops to dressy blouses and even amazing autumn dresses. The best part is that, since the jeans plus a dressy top trend has made a low-key comeback, you can feel free to rock your puffy blouse with a pair of mom jeans or any other jeans that do your body justice and feel amazing. The fabrics are usually soft, so you can always put a trench coat over the blouse if it gets chilly and you’ll look amazing and a little ostentatious – in the best way, when you remove the coat.

Check, Please!

The popularity of the grey oversized checked blazer, usually long enough to serve as a tuxedo dress at times, doesn’t seem to be dwindling down. If you haven’t grabbed your version, make sure to hop to it ASAP, because the pattern didn’t only mark the fall season but also has staying power, which makes it a great investment. Aside from that, with the mixture of menswear-inspired garments and those purely feminine, you’re going to need this baby to exude those mixed vibes. And if it remains as popular as it is now, it might just dethrone the mighty trench coat.

In Layering We Believe

Some are still in mourning over the end of summer, but instead of wallowing, jump on the amazing layering train, which allows you to show your mad mixing and matching skills and lets you unleash your inner fashion persona. There’s no need to say goodbye to dresses, as you can buy women’s dresses online, amazing and affordable ones at that, and practice the art of smart and chic layering. You can rock strappy dresses with shirts underneath and exude those trendy ‘90s vibes, and add a touch of athleisure with a warm and cozy pair of sneakers and cool and trendy polka dot tights. Finish off the look with a luxurious-looking long grey cardigan and bam – you’ve got yourself some layering gold.

A Complete Inevitability

A complete inevitability result

After a close inspection of the street style section of every fashion capital from Oslo to New York and London, the verdict is in, and the white boot trend still remains untouchable. Whether you’ll go for knee-high or the ankle ones is irrelevant, you simply must snag a pair. They have proven not only their chicness, but also their versatility; they’ve been rocked with simple jeans, tracksuits, frilly dresses and power suits. So, it’s time for us to give in and let them elevate our look and mystically blend into each one at the same time. We don’t know how, but these boots have become a complete style chameleon.

Colour-block It

Carolina Herrera may have given away the creative reigns, but she did leave us with one final message – always be elegant and don’t be afraid to play with colour. One of the absolute best looks, one that we presume will be remembered and worn for years to come, is the one featuring a simple crisp white shirt, a ball gown skirt and a wide belt in a contrasting colour. This is a look worthy of the red carpet and meeting the queen, but it is also great for going out or even rocking it at work. We have been reminded, once again, that there is so much beauty in simplicity, even when that simplicity includes colour-blocking. As pieces like these are easy to find, go and find your go-to colours and mix like there’s no tomorrow.

Power Up

Finally, let us not forget about
the mighty power suit. Every woman should own one, whether she is a ladyboss or not, because we all deserve to feel and look powerful. There are so many cuts that you can choose from fitted and oversized tailored blazers and wide-leg trousers in checked pattern, pastels or saturated colours, so make sure you pick one out and wear it as often as you can because this is unquestionably the outfit of autumn 2018.

Planning your Autumn wardrobe in 5 simple steps

With the summer already a distant memory, now that the temperature has started to drop, many of us are diving deep into our wardrobes, trying to find last year’s coat.

Published in Fashion

Adapting to changing seasons is no easy task when trying to balance appropriate clothing and keeping up with fashion trends. As seasons and trends change, so does the relevance of certain items in your wardrobe and your favourite, go-to garment of choice last Autumn may no longer be “on-trend” or looking in great condition. The key to creating a wardrobe that can be easily adapted to seasonal trends is to mix staple, timeless and versatile pieces with trend-led statement items so that you won’t have to completely overhaul your wardrobe every time a new season rolls around. Just because the leaves are starting to turn brown and shrivel up, doesn’t mean your sense of style has to as well. We’ve rounded up five essentials that every man needs in their wardrobe to keep them looking sharp this autumn.

Warm Basics

Streetwear is a trend that is currently taking the fashion industry by storm and it shows no signs of slowing down. Bulk your autumn wardrobe up with some staple streetwear basics that can be layered under trendy jackets or jumpers. Whether you’re relaxing at home or layering your basics and using them as an undershirt on colder days, having a plain crew neck t-shirt in simple colours such as white, grey or black is a must-have for any man’s wardrobe this autumn.

Shearling Jacket

In the past year or so, we’ve seen shearling coats in multiple colours for women and now it’s time for the men’s shearling jacket to burst onto the scene. If there’s anything you should do this autumn, it’s to invest in a quality shearling overcoat that will keep you warm during the cold months. Leather is also a huge trend this autumn, therefore, you could even mix the two trends and by purchasing a shearling lined jacket with an outer layer crafted from a mix of leather and suede to add texture and detail and be bang on-trend.

Check Pattern

A quick browse through the “new in” section of many fashion websites and it will soon become clear that checks are a huge trend this autumn. The catwalks have embraced this trend and models have been seen dressed from head to toe in bold and bright checked patterns. If all over check isn’t your thing, then we suggest teaming a checked shirt under a double-breasted jacket (also on-trend this autumn) to create the perfect subtle outfit, suitable for work or casual drinks. If you want to take check to the next stage and make a statement, invest in an overcoat with oversized tartan or plaid check print to transform your autumn look.

Knits

Gone are the days when a men’s knitted jumper or cardigan is associated with the older generation. The fashion world has taken the autumn/winter staple and injected style into it. It goes without saying that knits are a go-to for most during colder months. However, this year, not only will a staple knit keep you warm but you’ll be creating a stylish autumn look too. Try to stick to timeless bold colours for an effortless, clean look.

Sturdy Boots

There was a time when sturdy boots were only seen on the feet of hardcore hikers who spend their weekends walking for miles over the hills of the countryside. However, this year, walking-style boots have been adorning the catwalks of major fashion shows, with Louis Vuitton and Giorgio Armani even getting in on the action. Not only will a pair of sturdy lace up boots transform your footwear into a head-turning, fashion statement this autumn, but they are also extremely practical and comfortable to wear if you do find yourself on a long walk or caught in the unpredictable autumn weather.
